So, I know I will hear from the "no last names as first name crowd." I wonder what other thoughts you ladies might have on this name as well as short middle name options. Our last name is long and we like shorter nms.
Ughhh. With so many great boy names out there, this made the top of your list? And, FWIW, I like many surnames as first names. Unless it happens to be a family name, keep looking...

I agree it is terrible. i also think of the bird (fowl) reference, then foul like foulball, then I think of it being referred to a gross smell then finally I think of Jessica Wakefields best friend in Sweet Valley High, I think Fowler was her last name. No good thoughts come to mind is what I was trying to get at.
Was it Lila Fowler? Man, I freaking loved those books!!

Keep in mind that this comment is coming from someone who loves surnames for first names and particularly loves boy names that end in -er. I hate it. His nickname would end up being fowl, and my first thought wasn't birds, but foul as in the adjective (i.e., foul smell).
I don't mind many last names as first names (my DS is Connor which fits that trend). That being said, Fowler is not good. The world "foul" is ugly and I think of birds (fowl).
Like others have said, if Fowler is a family name for you or your maiden name then use it in the middle. But I would go back to the drawing board on the first name.

I'm not a fan. I don't have a problem with last names as first names but this just seems awkward as a first name to me. I'm with the people that think "fowl/foul" is a bad NN for it, plus there is a town near me called Fowlerville and that's all I can think of.
If it has a lot of significance I would use it as a MN.

This is exactly what I thought of - but I'm sure that's a generational thing.
I want to thank you for your input. I think your reactions had the opposite effect on DH and I than you might have intended. Those of you who said it made you think bird...well you were reinforcing our intentions of the name. We are complete fans of "occupational" names. That's why our ds1 is names Sawyer. I don't use this board generally for "please approve my name." And, if I can stand up to the "foul"name things you said about the name...and still feel it is right for my LO...then that is even more proof to me.

No skin off our teeth. Your child, your choice. But how exactly did our negative responses encourage you to like it more? And I've never heard of the occupation of a fowler.
At least DS1 has an awesome name.

A Fowler is a "bird trapper". It is directly related to the occupations and hobbies of both DH and myself. Just as Sawyer is a "wood worker" which again relates to family business.
The negative comments did not make me like it more...just made me realize it was right for us. If I could still love something despite the negative comments, then it must be a true contender.
I was truly saying thank you for the comments. They gave DH and I a lot to consider.

If it's a really important family name (like your surname/maiden name or your mom's), I say ok.
But if it's just a name you like, I'd think twice. Especially if your ln is a common noun.

this. My first thought was "fouler than what?" It's not good at all.

this is coming from a mother of a child with a first name as last name:
