Pregnant after a Loss

Light spotting and cramping after transvaginal ultrasound

Is this" normal"? I had a transvaginal ultrasound yesterday at 2 pm and about 24 hrs later I started mild brown spotting and mild cramping. Trying not to freak. The baby looked fine on the ultrasound with a good heartbeat. I'm just over 7 weeks.

  • I'm not a doctor, but I'm going to go with "normal". Brown means old blood, so it's usually not something to worry about. Cramping is also normal as your ute is growing and stretching. If you're concerned, maybe you can check in with your doc? I would also suggest making sure you drink plenty of water and rest, just in case.

  • Yes it is completely normal to have spotting and/or cramping after a transvaginal ultrasound, you can also have these after sex.
  • I definitely had a bit of spotting after my transvaginal ultrasounds--everything was fine, though.  It is very hard not to freak out! Sorry you're going through this.

  • It's normal, but I'm sure it's unsettling for you. I hope it stops now and gives your mind a break.

  • It's hard not to freak out about it, I know, but I've heard this is quite common. I've had spotting and cramping with a transvaginal ultrasound even while not pregnant. Your cervix is a very, very delicate thing right now and it doesn't like to be bothered.

Just take it easy and relax for awhile, don't over exert yourself!

  • I am on the boat this is normal.  I actually had blood on the transvaginal probe when they took it out.  A little scary, but I had already been spotting so I figured it was from this.  Some cervix's are very sensitve during pregnany.  And not to mention how much they jam that thing against your cervix during the ultrasound.

  • Thanks ladies.  Things seem a little better this morning.  Of course I'm still slighlty freaked and will likely be making several bathroom trips today just to check.

  • Brown is "old blood" which is a little tissue your uterus didn't expel during a previous period. As far as cramping, I have it for the next day or two after exams. If they even just prod a little, I end up cramping after. A growing uterus can be sensitive. I wouldn't worry at all unless either symptom changes or doesn't stop. Then give the Dr a call. Even if it's nothing, it's part of their job to reassure us about these things.
