K'Tan wearers, please help me

DS has gotten so fussy during the day that he can't stay asleep for naps unless I'm holding him.  Every time I put him down (swaddled), he'll startle himself awake and cries.

I tried the K'Tan 2 wks ago w/DS and he screamed his head off.  I watched the Kangaroo position video on K'Tan website but I can't get DS in it.  I think one issue is he was kicking so his legs weren't tugged in.  Also, I never manage to get enough fabric behind his head to support it.

Fast forward 2 weeks and here we are today.  He's been screaming for the last hour because he's over-tired (I just changed him and nursed him beforehand).  Put him in the swing and he woke himself up.  So I got the K'Tan out and am trying again.  I still cannot get enough fabric behind his head even w/his legs tugged, but he is resting his head against my chest, so is this okay?  He was screaming when I put him in but now he's fast asleep (finally!).

DS is only 6wks but is already almost 12 lbs. He has very good head and neck control at this time, so is it okay to try another position?

Anyway, my question for you is:

1) Which position do you use w/your K'Tan?  If you are NOT using the kangaroo position, when did you switch out of it and what made you do it?

2) How old is your LO and how much does s/he weigh?

3)  Any other tips or suggestions for me?

TIA!

Re: K'Tan wearers, please help me

  • My DS is 9 weeks, 12 lbs and hasn't tolerated the kangaroo position since 5ish weeks. He much prefers his legs to be free, stomach to stomach with me. I think it's the "hug" position. I can still support his head easily in that position since he gets floppy when he sleeps.

  • We do the hug position and it works well. If our LOs head flops whilst asleep I support it with one of the crossed pieces. But the majority of the time the fabric crosses in such a way that it supports his head without being covered (support at nape).

  • I use the hug position and it works like a charm! He is 8wks and 10ish lbs.

This.  We stopped the kangaroo maybe after 3-4wks.  LO is now 8.5wks and about 12 lbs.  He loves the hug position but I do support his head while he is looking around.  Once he's asleep, a side of his face is against my chest and the crossed fabrics is enough for support.

  • Thanks for all your replies!

DS managed to stay asleep in the Kangaroo position for 45 mins before he woke up and started screaming and kicking his tugged-in legs.

I might try the Kangaroo again tomorrow and see how it goes - if all fails, I'll use the Hug position as it seems easier than Kangaroo.

Just to be sure - you all use the SASH with the Hug position?

  • I felt the kangaroo position smooshed his head into me too much-  I could never get it right.  We do the hug position.

  • Yes, definitely use the sash with the hug position. Otherwise your LO can push backwards and launch himself out of the k'tan.

  • I use my K'tan with the Kangaroo position..My LO is 11 weeks and was 11 lbs last we checked (which was a few weeks ago so probably closer to 12 now). Sometimes my LO moves around so her head isn't in it but is laid against my chest or she tries to push up to hold her head up herself..I usually just keep a hand behind her head which isn't the easiest thing to do when you're trying to do other things but it does work when they just want to be close to you to sleep. I haven't tried any of the other positions yet but I'd think it all depends on the head and neck control.
