Getting rid of pacifier at nap time...

So Thursday was my first attempt at taking DD's pacifier.  Nap time was a fail.  One hour into it she was still crying hysterically with no sign of giving up.  Nighttime went very well.  She fussed for a few minutes and that was it.  Friday she was in daycare and had her pacifier.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday were was horrible again but only for nap time.  Ultimately, after an hour or more of her non stop crying, trying to get out of her crib and screaming "poop" (which she didn't), I have given in and let her have the pacifier.  Nighttime has been much, much easier.  I know I should not give in at nap time but it's not getting easier at all.  I have promised her the world (cookies and a special treat) if she can sleep without it but I just don't know what else to do.  As I type this, she has been in her crib for one hour, has pulled her diaper off (which I have replaced) and is on her third time of throwing everything out of her crib.  And, of course is screaming "poop!!"

And, to make it difficult, I am 21 weeks pregnant and have been missing my naps because of this!!

Re: Getting rid of pacifier at nap time...

  • We got rid of the pacifier when LO was around 7-8 months old (either that or 6... don't know why I don't remember). It was harder on us than him.

The first couple of days will be very difficult, but after that it's easy. You just have to stick with it. Don't give in. It is easier said than done but once you give that paci back it's like starting all over again. I personally would rather deal with a week (I think LO was fine after about 4 days) of temper tantrums than dealing with a 2 year old who is very attached to their binky. If you decide to transition instead of going cold turkey, do nights first then naps. GL!

  • I would do what pp suggested an let her har it for naps for a bit longer while you continue to work on nighttime.

Once she's done with it at night for sure, I'd suggest trying the cutting method. You start on day one by poking holes in the paci and offering it to baby as you normally would. The holes take away some of the suction and baby will notice it's not as pleasurable as before. Next day, cut a tiny bit of the tip off. Again, baby will notice and probably fuss now. Play along and say it's broken, then offer them another one, also with the tip cut. Next day, cut a little more. The 'method' says that by day four, baby will give it up on her own because its not comforting anymore. I plan to try this with DD when she turns two; we'll see if it works. Google "bye bye binky" for more info.
