Eczema Remedies?

My poor baby has some pretty serious eczema going on right now, I took him in last week and the pedi told me to do hydrocortizone cream mixed with lotion 2x/day, baking soda baths for at least 15 minutes every other day, and to keep his skin super moisturized.  Does anyone have anything that works wonders?  We started using Aveeno non scented bath stuff (I hate J&J products but the poor guy was so miserable and we don't have many natural places around here.  I didn't want to order something without knowing if it works).  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you! :)

Re: Eczema Remedies?

  • When our eczema is flared, I use Calmoseptine (OTC at the pharmacy). To prevent (and to treats mild flares)...coconut oil. I use it straight out of the bath. I bath him 2-3 times a week and use just water or dr b baby soap.

    I don't like aveno products.

  • I personally don't like any medicated creams OTC or prescribed. Baking soda baths can help. I would stop Aveeno products if I was you, even the "mild" or "eczema" line has lots of chemicals that in the end only irritate the same problem you are trying to control.

What helps DS: I bathe every other day, we only use Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild--bar, liquid dries his skin a little--and I keep the soap to a minimum too. I grind organic rolled oats to a fine powder and add about half a cup to the bath water, it leaves his skin soft. I lather him up with CJ's BUTTer Unscented after the bath. CJ's will clear up any flare ups overnight! Coconut oil did not helped in fact it aggravates his eczema.

The soap you can find it at any grocery store that has a "natural/organic" section. I buy mine at Kroger. CJ's I get at my local CD store but you can always order online. jackbenatural.com has free shipping and you can order a sample size to try it out first for about $1.50.

I would look at what other products around the house you use too, like detergents, fabric softener, even air freshners or people around him that use perfumes. Diet sometimes is a culprit for a trigger. If you have nothing around to use, plain olive oil would do the trick! HTH!

ETA: Keep the house at 50% humidity, particularly with winter the air in the house gets too dry. Sorry this got long :)

  • I like Stephanie and Harry's post. Great advice. Did you know that eczema is 90% environmental? Poor little babies, they are constantly being bombarded with irritating chemicals that most parents don't even think about. It is true, you need to look at the products you are using currently besides the shampoos and lotions. Laundry detergents, stain removers, even cleaning products. They all can affect our little ones who are sensitive. My daughter suffered from bad asthma, and my son had eczema on his legs. I went through every kind of lotion and cream that my Dr. reccommended. It became terribly expensive trying all these products on him, and tossing them when they didn't work. A family member introduced me to a wholesale shopping club that specialized in products that help alleviate allergies, asthma and eczema. I found them to be less expensive than the grocery brands and SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE. They have this lotion called Renew and it totally rocks. My son's eczema cleared up within a few applications and getting all of the toxic products out of the home. He is eczema clear now. It is priceless! Check out the wholesale shopping club @ www.livetototalwellness.com/enhancingfamilies . Good luck to you and your little one!

  • I don't have eczema but had a weird pregnancy rash and several people with eczema recommended goatboy soap. they said it cleared their eczema right up. it ended up being the only soap that i could use. might be worth a try.

  • Go and get Aveeno's Baby Eczema lotion.  Put in on baby twice a day (morning and after bath.)  It cleared up my baby's eczema within just a few days-and it was horrible.  I am SO thankful I came across it-we were about to have to start him on steroids for it.  Hopefully it will work for y'all too!

  • Is he ebf or ff? Dairy, gluten, corn and soy are big triggers of eczema.
