Breastfeeding

If you EP can you pass on thrush to LO?

Just curious, if you EP & never nurse directly - can you pass thrush on to LO?

I don't have thrush ATT; just a question that popped into my head.  I'm on antibiotics for a breast infection & heard they can cause thrush.  Just thinking ahead - GOD forbid!!

  • yes. it is passed on through breastmilk. however, you should not stop pumping or breastfeeding, there are ways to get rid of it while continuing your routine.
  • My lc recommended taking a probiotic supplement especially when taking antibiotics to avoid thrush.
  • My doctor just told me yes last week.

  • Yes but I wouldn't worry about it.  I nursed for 4+ months while trying to get rid of thrush and my son never got it. My pedi kept emphasizing that the benefits of breast milk outweighed any risk.

Sorry if my earlier post was part of what got you thinking about this.  I think there are a lot of ways to avoid it.   Take a probiotic, let your chest air dry or use a hair dryer after you pump, change bras or nursing pads all the time so everything is dry and clear of milk, avoid lanolin which holds in the moisture.  Cooler winter temps probably help too. If you are really worried I'd do a dilute vinegar rinse after you pump, this held mine at bay a little bit each time it came back.
