Eta: she was 8lb 15oz at birth.

  • Hm interesting. My pedi told me to do it for my guys reflux and I still haven't because I am too nervous he already has tummy issues. We go Wednesday for his 2 month so I will be interested to see what she says. Your baby does not sound large my guy is probably close to 15 lbs by now no joke and can't adding cereal cause them to overeat sometimes?

  • Right, and can't they not digest it yet!?

My mind is just blown. I think I may ignore her....is that bad? :/

  • And my guy was 8 lbs 1 oz at birth too

  • I wouldn't. My DS is 16lbs and the doctor didn't say anything about rice cereal.

  • I wouldn't do it in your case if you're not comfortable it doesn't sound medically necessary

  • Dd has gained 4 pounds since birth, as well. That advice is out of date.

  • Yeah. I think she has reflux, and I brought that up to her but she never mentioned it. Just said she is eating to many ounces per day. And to do 3  ounces formula to a tablespoon cereal?

Doesnt that sound like a lot of cereal anyone. I really don't think I'm comfortable with doing it honestly. :(

  • I would ignore personally. And get a new pedi.

Fwiw DS was 9lb 3 oz at birth and weighed in today at 15lb 2 oz. They are super happy with him because he is big but staying on his curves pretty much. Look at your percentiles. If LO was 80 percentile at birth and is still 80 percentile, that's perfect! Seems to me like you'd be well within that zone.

  • Sorry about the heart murmur. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious.  As for the cereal i would skip that advice. It sounds nuts!  I ignored my pedi when they told me my LO was gaining too fast. They suggested cutting down his time on the boob b4 he wants to (I BF till he wants to quit and pulls off). My LC was not happy about this and I followed her advice instead.  Just had our 2 mo appt and his weight gain is on track!
  • Absolutely no way would I do this, personally. Your gut is obviously telling you something about it isn't right if you're asking us. PP is right.. this is pretty outdated advice and from what I've read, rice cereal isn't really digestable at this age and just basically sits on their stomach to make them feel full but doesn't actually do anything beneficial for them nutritionally.

  • Yeah my gut is cringing!!!! I totally agree everything I read say show useless it is, and how it can't be digested.....I'm just shocked with her. She has been my daughters pedi for three years and never said anything this crazy...

Thank you, we are hoping it is something that will go away in time. :( I formula feed because bfing didnt work out for us but I can't imagine even bottle feeding and just taking the food away. Makesme wonder if the doctors do this stuff or if our kids are just the guinea pigs....

That is odd too.. DS was 8lb 11oz and is now 13.5lb. She said he is healthy keep up the good work.

My LO was 12lbs 10oz at two months and my doctor said it was great. She was 8lbs 2oz at birth... Weird on the cereal thing.

  • just curious....how many ounces does your lo eat each day if the doctor says it's toomuch?
  • Ds was 6 lbs at birth and 12 at 2 months. Average. I would definitely question cereal.

5-6 ounces every four hours, 6-7 hour stretches eating 3-4 ounces at night.

  • Also my husband completely disagrees with me not listening to the doctor as far as the cereal goes..blah.
  • We had our appt today too and got same advice. Our appt was late in the month, he is actually 10 weeks and we got same advice. Daniel was born at 7.11 and was 13.5 today, plus he has grown inches since birth!!!

Dr said add cereal because he is eating 3235oz BM a day I EP. She examined if he is taking that much his tummy may be wanting more.

I don't think this is as crazy as everyone else does. I think you do whatever feels right. We will probably try after Jan 1... He turns 3mos in the 5th.

  • That is old school advise. I wouldn't do the cereal for weight management. I think that early introduction of solids is associated with higher weight later. My brain is worthless these days.

Ok I was just asking because I know it is not recommended to feed more than 32 ounes per day. Maybe that's why your pedi said to add cereal?? But in another post recently a lot of people seemed to be giving 35 to 40 ounces a day.
  • Btw I should mention my pedi said to add it at 1 feeding per day... Not every feeding.

Yeah mine deff said a tablespoon per feeding.... Hmmm...not going to find a new pedi, she's not crazy and she has two kids under 6 so it's hard to think she's completely off her rocker. But that doesn't mean I have to feed my baby cereal yet. She has been my daughters pedi for three years and I haven't ever questioned her until now. I'm wondering if she really did suggest that much cereal for the reflux and just thought I assumed she meant that?? Who knows. Maybe I shall call and ask why so much cereal doc? Lol :/
