Diaper rash AFTER Antibiotic?

O just finished up a two week course of antibiotics.(He had an ear infection that wouldn't go away) Anyway, he finished the meds on Sat morning and since last night he has had a really bad diaper rash. I'm thinking maybe his body his got used to the antibiotics and now it's trying to level back out? I don't know...

I know kids definitely get rashes while taking antibiotics but I've never really experienced them getting one after. It doesn't look like a yeast rash, at least not yet. Right now, we're doing frequent diaper changes and lots of Triple Paste.

What do you guys think? Delayed reaction from the meds or something else?

Re: Diaper rash AFTER Antibiotic?

  • Could be a delayed reaction...esp if he had an upset tummy from the antibiotics.  I would try an oatmeal bath-aveeno makes a great one for babies and toddlers.  It always helps when O's gets like that.  When he gets out I try to quarantine him to the tile floor area and let him run around without a diaper for 15-20 minutes...

  • I would guess a yeast rash that just isn't too "yeasty" looking yet.  I'd just go for the Monistat/Lotrimin cream right off the bat, but my kid tends to always get yeast rashes after antibiotics. :)

  • For C they usually caused extra poopy diapers which would then cause the rash, usually around that time.  We started using Florastor concurrently with the antibiotics and that helped.  I could definitely see the yeast rash happening though.

  • My DD had this exact thing happen after a round on antibiotics. I called our pedi and she told me not to put any diaper rash cream on it because it was most likely a yeast rash. She recommended any anti fungal cream we had like lamisil. I did that and also upped her yogurt intake and the rash was gone in a day or two.
