PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Mismatched Furniture Edition

First, thanks to everyone for their great advice last week about my carpal tunnel issues. I am trying to follow everyone's tips, and I am glad to say that things seem a little better already.

My DH is driving back from IKEA even as we speak with a load of nursery furniture. I couldn't go along, unfortunately, because one of the items had to protrude into the front passenger seat for it to fit in the car at all. Even though we bought the two major pieces of baby furniture at IKEA (crib and dresser), they don't match. One is birch and the other is white--while the shelf we are hanging above the white dresser is also birch. We didn't want the super-dark-brown that everyone seems to think is the in thing for boy furniture because it would make the room look too dark. And we are getting a La-Z-Boy as our glider because we want something we can put in the living room later. I want a nice red chair. So it will be a very eclectic boy's nursery...on to the check-in!

Re: PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Mismatched Furniture Edition

  •  FYI-our nuresery furniture doesn't match either.  We are using the same stuff we used for DS (hand me downs) and a new dresser from IKEA and a rocker we bought.  I'm not really a matchy-matchy kind of gal anyway but the furniture we got from a friend is really nice and light birch as well.  The dresser is brown-grey and the rocker is also light birch.  It works and I think it looks sweet.

My mom got us these really cute curtains for the nursery from Germany on her last visit.  They were too long so I hemmed them and I am using the leftover fabric to make decorations for DD's nursery.

I have a growth scan on 12/28 that I am looking forward too.  I am getting bigger and more uncomfortable and my boobs look ridiculous.  I can't believe I still have 6 weeks to go!

  • I really like/appreciate contrasting pieces of furniture. Just have to make sure it all balances. That being said- we bought all black-brown furniture for LO's nursery from IKEA :)

I've been fairly nursery crazy and I'm happy to say that it's pretty much finished once we get the last of our backordered items in in January.

From IKEA- Sundvik Crib, Expedit Shelf, Hemnes Dresser- all in black brown as well as a few floating shelves. Using the dresser as a changing table.

Walls are a light brown, curtains navy, a cushy pillow rocker in brown w/a bright red throw pillow. Bedding is baby blue/navy/white/brown/red all hand stitched (quilt going on the wall)w/vintage cars of all kinds on it.

My fav(s) is a toss up between the fun PBK rug:

All systems go- glucose test and another ultrasound for next appt in 4 weeks. Then I start going in bi-weekly!

  •  My twin cribs won't be matchy matchy b/c we are getting a crib/dresser from a friend and then I will be buying another crib.  I will try to match the color (oak) but not the same exact crib.

I am doing a yellow and grey neutral themed nursery since both boy and girl will share the nursery.  The girl will get the yellow striped crib skirt and the boy will get the grey.  Then I will mix/match yellow and grey crib sheets so I can use them for either crib (more bang for my buck).

  • QOTW: My nursery is orange and blue.  It is designed around a canvas print of my dog at the beach wearing a orange Hawian shirt.  It is not your typical girly girl nursery but I love the beach theme.  I ordered an orange fabric rocker but it has not come yet.  I think that will be my favorite piece.

Updates and vents: My BP continues to gradually go up.  They decided not to start me on the weekly ultrasounds until Jan 11.  I did find out that they will not let me go one day past my due date due to my issues.  That takes the marathon going through my neighborhood the day after my due date out of the equation so that is a relief.

I am ready for Christmas to be over with so that I can get ready for this baby.

  • I don't like furniture sets usually-- I'm a fan of the idea that "things don't have to match; they just have to go."

QOTW: Our baby's room is going to be the only open, available bedroom in the house (our bed is so big, it takes up one entire bedroom so we use the adjoining bedroom as a dressing room). It's also the biggest bedroom and because it has 4 windows on one wall and is at the front of the house, it stays nice and warm all year round.

The room was already a sage green colour, so we're keeping it because it's nice and neutral and I don't feel like painting. I will be making an Ast?rix the Gaul mural on one of the walls with the main characters doing their "thing" with their village in the background. Then the crib I'm getting is a dark brown and has an attached (but detachable) changing table-- my friend never used it for her 2nd child and is giving it to us for free. The dresser is my old dresser that I cleaned out a bunch of my clothes from (I can't fit into much anyhow!) and repainted a maroon. The new knobs and handles will arrive next week or so. We're keeping a couple pieces in there from before-- a bookcase my dad built and is older than I am and some other items. They are mostly dark wood, since that's what I like-- dark and cherry finishes.

I don't know what my favourite item is yet, but I'm pretty stoked about the mural that I'm going to make. And I think the dresser looks fantastic already.

Update/vents: My next appointment is December 26th. I hope I get to see the baby and not just hear it this time. I'm also guessing we'll have the chance to look at my b/w that was taken last visit (although no call means no worries). My 20 week U/S will be in January, 3 weeks after my December visit. Woohoo! Can't wait!

  • QOTW:  I will be thrilled to just have a room for this baby when the time comes.  We have a major renovation planned to expand our kid's existing rooms and add another one.  No ideas yet about decorating or anything, although I have been caught looking at bedding and maybe a new crib for this LO.

UPDATES:  Got to hear the heartbeat last thursday for the first time and even though this is baby #3, sure doesn't make it any less thrilling to hear for the first time.  I have my NT scan on Weds which I am looking forward to.  I am rocking a horrible bronchitis/sinus infection and haven't been to work for a week.  Luckily we managed to get our christmas tree last night, I think the kids were starting to think that Christmas had been cancelled!!!!!

I'm not quite sure what we are going to do yet in terms of the crib color.  I know that we are going to paint the walls grey and get a dresser off of craigslist and paint it yellow.

  • I also used furniture from 2 different IKEA lines, one white, one a light wood ( a bit darker than birch.  We chose the pieces because they fit best in the room.

I haven't done any shopping for this baby. She or he will be sharing a room with my daughter, she's still in her old crib that converts to a toddler bed.  I've started looking at big girl beds for her.  The room was a classic winnie the pooh theme, but now that I know how much my daughter loves animals, I think that will be the new one. We'll focus more on the baby once we know the sex.  He or she will be sleeping in a bassinette in our room for the first few months anyway.

Updates: Not much news on the pregnancy, just nauseous and tired. MH bday was last week and my DD's kid bday party was over the wknd. Her actual bday is Friday and I'm baking cupcakes for her to take to her last day of school on Wednesday. I'm tired of baking and I've barely done any Christmas shopping. I'm just ready for the holidays to be over so I can get a break. I feel like a total scrooge this year.

  • QOTW:  We haven't gotten a thing yet, or really figured out how we are going to rearrange the house to fit baby in.  Not sure I am going to do a themed nursery - thinking just a nice pattern/colors.

Updates:  Nothing really, feeling pretty good still.  Have to wait several weeks for our level 2 ultrasound and probably amnio for the high NT results.  Trying to keep myself sane during the wait.

  • I am STILL pregnant - I can not believe it. Having had increasingly earlier babies for the last 3, I never dreamed I'd get much past the first of Dec, let alone this close to Christmas. DH just started a new job last week & the job site is nearly 2hrs away - my last labor was just 2 hrs start to finish, so maybe I'm ok waiting until the end of the week so that he won't miss it.

Honestly, my two favorite things for this baby are 2nd hand. One, is a navy blue wool-felt covered Euro-style bassinet that I picked up at Goodwill back in the early part of the summer for only $5. The other is a small vintage postage-stamp multi-colored quilt with a pale yellow flannel backing. It has lived at my mom's house, and all my other babies have used it when we've gone to visit her. When we were there the last time, I told her how much I have always loved it, and she told me to take it home!

I've made his quilt in oranges, greens, browns & blues to coordinate with his brothers' quilts; a couple of the cute little neck-tie onesies; several gauze swaddle blankets; recovered our Boppy in bright colors, etc. But, yep, the second-hand stuff is my favorite this time.

So far the only thing we have for the nursery is a giant teddy bear. We saw it when out doing some Christmas shopping a couple of weeks ago and neither of us could resist.

Our nursery is right now a mostly empty room. There is an old second-hand bench with some storage a friend gave me several years ago, that I think would make a nice toy chest if we paint it. It's scratched and a little beaten up at the moment.

DH and I did start discussing what colour we'd like to paint it. The walls are the same light grey as the rest of our house. I'd like to go with green, he suggested yellow. We don't know the sex yet and while we plan to find out I don't want a gender-themed nursery anyway.

No real updates. Still staring constantly at the photo from our ultrasound last week. I am definitely feeling pregnant now though. Other than the first few minutes when I wake up, I have a constant queasy feeling that never goes away. As long as I eat regularly it doesn't get too bad. I am also really really tired. Last night cooking dinner and organizing the pantry did me in. I am trying really hard not to complain. I wanted to be pregnant for a long time and kept promising myself that when or if it finally happened I would not complain about anything. But the queasiness and fatigue are starting to wear on me a bit. I am starting to forget what it feels like to feel good.

This was me but this pregnancy is a lot harder than I expected.  I have started to complain more to DH because if I don't then he thinks everything is fine and doesn't realize that I do need extra help.  He helps but he does it at his pace and not mine.

  • QOTW:  I have not gotten anything for the nursery.  Our plan was to wait until after the holidays and then get started on it in January.  I know that I will buy a white crib but thats kind of it.  I like furniture that isn't too matchy.  I really have just starting looking online to get some ideas, hello pinterest :).  I want to go with a neutral wall color and I know I don't want a theme but nothing is decided.

Updates:  Nothing much has changed and I feel mostly pretty good.  I still have headaches often and I'm tired.  In the last week I have felt some twitches and a bubble a couple times.  I'm anxious to really feel movement.

  • I love "mismatched" furniture and we plan to do the same. Sets for any room of the house have never appealed to me. Yours sounds great!

Nursery favorites: I've picked most things out but haven't bought anything except for the crib and glider (both on order still). His nursery will be robot-themed, which I'm super excited for...partially because my robot collection will be part of his decor.

Updates/vents: I'm getting over a cold which was no fun, especially without meds. Besides the sleeplessness, all is going smoothly. I'm a little nervous about how big my belly is going to get in the homestretch...10 weeks to go starting tomorrow!
