Caloric Intake - Twins

I dont know if I'm just being a worry wart or if this is something I should really be concerned about but...

I am carrying twins, everything i read tells me that i need to eat an extra 600 or so calories a day to keep them nutritionally "satisfied."  However, I have pretty much lost my appetite, dont really have cravings of any sort and really just get through the day eating what i would eat prior to being pregnant (yogurt for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, and a normal dinner) -- i know i need to up my caloric intake, does anyone have any ideas on something I could try?  I was thinking stuff like Boost/Ensure as a starter, anything other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance!

Re: Caloric Intake - Twins

  • I started drinking more milk, eating more avocados, nuts, and cheese, and replaced my low-fat condiments with full fat ones (like mayo, sour cream).  I drank Ensure or Ensure plus before bed.  Most of this was done to keep me full because I was ALWAYS hungry.

  • In addition to what the PP suggested, I'd also recommend smoothies, I like the Naked ones regular or high protein. Or you can make your own. Same goes for milkshakes; try making your own and adding bananas or strawberries, maybe the Chocolate flavored protein drink powder?, full fat ice cream and 2 percent milk.

Dr. Barbara Luke's book, "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, and Quads" has some good nutrition tips, although her methods are a little extreme! She recommends 3,500 calories a day for a twin pregnancy!!

  • Don't worry too much. I didn't have an appetite at all in the first trimester. I barely ate anything and my dr was not concerned. You will start to gain weight in the second trimester, when it is needed. You really don't need to eat that much more in the first trimester, just eat what you can.

  • I agree with the the other posters, more milk, more high protein/calorie foods.  I had trouble with my appetite in the beginning, not even wanting to eat ice cream.  So I drank a LOT of milk, ate greek yogurt and full fat cheeses, nuts, etc.  I have also been told that Dr Lukes book goes overboard.  As long as the babies keep growing, you are doing well!
