Babies: 6 - 9 Months

introducing milk

Dd is BF and I will be starting to wean, and transfering over to cows milk. I'm going to ask the ped at next appt but was just curious now as to how I do it? I've been reading that milk can be hard on their little tummies so I'm assuming she can't take a full bottle right away. Tips?

  • Thanks for asking this question! I have been wondering the same thing. Also, if the have a slight dairy intolerance, can you do soy or rice milk instead?

  • We were told by our ped to wait until at least a year old to transition to cow's milk. From what I gathered, their tummies can't break down the cow's milk completely like they do the BM and formula, and the proteins and minerals can put added strain on their little kidneys. Obviously all babies are different though and there are different school's of thought.

Anyways, I would just double check with the ped. If they say it's ok to go ahead and start, maybe start out by mixing a little cow's milk in with the BM and then gradually work your way up to just cow's milk by increasing the ratio of CM : BM.

  • At 1 year you can introduce whole milk, at 2 years of age you can do 2% milk

I just want tro point out that dd is almost 9 months .. And we do live in Canada. Apparently the rules are slightly different although I'm not sure why. Drs say between 912 months is fine. I was planning on meeting somewhere in between as I don't have enough supply to pump.

  • The reason babies can't break down milk is because of the hydrogenation process which keeps the milk from separating in the jug and gives it a longer shelf life in the store. It also makes it harder to break down in our bodies and is a leading cause of cholesterol. I would suggest an goats milk or cow milk that's not hydrogenated. Try a local supplier or health food store. Add it little by little to the BM so LOs tummy can adapt to the proteins, bacteria, and fat.
