Coughing on liquids

Does this happen to anyone...Little man is 2 and has always choked on water...its more of a cough type thing then choking he certainly doesn't turn blue or anything like that its just like a little coughing fit for a second and then its done but more recently people are saying I should call his pedi about it. I never thought it was much to worry about just thought he's probably getting to much from straw/spout but now im wondering.....

Re: Coughing on liquids

  • My new baby actually has laryngomalacia, which makes her aspirate.  She chokes when she drinks, too.  I'd definitely talk to the pedi and try and see a specialist for that.  It can cause respiratory infections and pneumonia if not treated correctly.  If that is what it is at all!

  • Does he drink liquids other than water ok? How does he do with a regular cup?

  • I would make an appt with the pedi. I'm a nurse and I know when older people have this happen when drinking it can be concerning. The dr usually orders a swallowing study under Xray.
