Trouble TTC

When to move on???

I just had an RE appt this week. I was very shocked when he brought up moving on to other treatments if this cycle fails. This will only be my third cycle of clomid + ovidrel.  I had one BFP (ended in missed abortion) and one BFN. Good response to the meds both times (8-12 follicles). He uped me to 150 clomid this round.

When did you move on to more advanced treatments? Is he trying to move on too fast, or am I way off base?

Thanks!

Re: When to move on???

  • Are you doing TI or IUI? You are running a huge risk of multiples with that many follicles potentially releasing an egg. I think you need to get a second opinion if your current RE is okay with proceeding with that many follicles.

  • Sorry for the confusion...8-12 total follicles. 1-3 of these matured. We are doing TI.

    Thanks!

  • Okay...now that makes more sense. My RE doesn't like to do more than 3 of the same protocol. In the end, it's up to your and your husband.talk with your RE about what he suggests and what the chances of success are.

  • I would move on to IUI after three attempts of just clomid and TI. Plus I would ask your doc about the AFC of 8 to 12 because you might have the start of diminished ovarian reserve if they only see 8 on CD 3. Women in their 20's and early 30s should have 8 to 12 on each side, not total. Maybe you heard wrong?

kati- I usually have only responded with 6-7 follies total, and I have a great ovarian reserve. I didn't read her whole history, but for me I wouldn't be surprised if maybe it had something to do with my pcos.

My RE, and from the sound of other women on the boards most REs, like to only do one specific protocol for 3 cycles before trying something else.

8-12 follicles? I'm assuming most were not mature.

and, I think you mean missed miscarriage.

Oh my gosh, yes. I really hope you'll consider changing your signature because a miscarriage is not an abortion. Not at all.

A miscarriage is a spontaneous abortion.  I know abortion has become a "dirty word" associated with the choice to terminate, but miscarriage is a type of abortion.  I can understand that its probably hard to look at.

I do understand that, but its certainly not generally accepted language for a miscarriage - here at least. You're correct that I was wrong to say that a miscarriage is not an abortion, but in terms of the accepted semantics of this board (and outside of it), "abortion" seems to be an inappropriate choice. It's simply not common to call it that.

  • I apologize. I tend to go with correct medical terminology; however, if that is not acceptable here, I will change it. It was difficult for me to understand at first as well until my doctor explained it.

    Thanks for the responses!
