Explaining shooting to kids?

I have a 5 y.o with severe anxiety and ADHD. I also have a 3.5 year old in PreSchool.  I know that they are going to find out about the shooting, especially my 5 year old at lunch, on the bus or just in the classroom.

Are any of you explaining the situation?  If so, what are you saying?

Thanks!

Re: Explaining shooting to kids?

  • I'm not bringing it up - I don't think he'll hear about it (my DS is only 4.5 in a preschool class) and if he does, and comes home w/ questions I'll answer them then.

  • I just don't see the need to go into details with my 6 year old.  At church today the flag was at half staff.  He asked about that and I said that some kids got hurt and a man serving our country (someone that used to go to our church just died in Afghanistan).  He asked if they died would they go to heaven and I said yes.  I guess I'll answer his questions as he has them...
  • The National Association of School Psychologists has some online resources that might be helpful on their front page... including talking to kids about violence.
