Breastfeeding question.

DS2 is 8 weeks old and still takes about 45-50 minutes to eat and still eating every 2 hours.  Is this still normal?  Sometimes I feel he is comfort nursing and not sure when he actually stops.  Should I be setting a set time on each side to nurse him or still let him nurse as long as he wants?  It's frustrating since I have a 20 month old running loose around the house every time I'm nursing DS2 about 8 times a day.  I still feel like we are all over the place with no schedule and feel a little jealous when a lot of people are talking about their babes on schedules already.

Re: Breastfeeding question.

  • My DS definitely is still eating every 2 hours and he's 9 weeks old. I am so ready for him to go longer stretches I feel your pain!

  • My DD is still bf every two hours and she is 9 weeks. She does not nurse quite as long as your LO though. I can empathize with keeping up with the toddler though while nursing. It's a whole new challenge! I get on the floor with him while he's playing and ill nurse her on my lap. He's much more likely to stay there if I'm with him. Or...tv can be a wonderful friend, though I try to limit the amount we watch each day. It does work to keep him occupied.

We have been watching way to much tv since DS2 was born :(   I feel I have created a monster with that.  He is so use to watching it now all the time that he gets mad when I turn it off.  It's horrible :(  I seriously feel like I want to throw in the towel on BF because it's so stressful with DS1 while I'm always feeding DS2 :(

  • 45 min sounds like comfort nursing for sure...I have heard most babies empty the breast in 10-20 min. So if I were you, I would unlatch him after that amount of time, unless yo'ure comfortable and don't mind the comfort nursing. I know for me, nursing that long would wreck my nipples.
