DS fights "bedtime"

DS hates hates hates to be put down at night.  She does fine during the day for her morning naps and even in the middle of the night after she wakes up to feed ... I can lay her down drowsy or semi drowsy and she goes down no prolem but for whatever reason she hates when we try to put her down anytime between 6:00-9:30.

It doesnt matter if she slept a lot during the day or didnt take a lot of naps, it's always a fight.  We always start trying to put her down early in the evening but it can take hours.  Anyone else struggling?  What is working for you?

  • Liv does the same thing.  Most nights if she is not dead asleep she is crying/screaming within minutes.  I asked our pedi about it at the last appointment.  She said just keep at it and do your best not to take her out of her room/crib too much.   We have been trying to comfort her in her crib, but it doesn't always work. Some nights I'm just so tired I let her pass out on me for like 20 minutes before putting her down.

  • I had been told that earlier bed times are better so we were trying to start as early as 6:30.  Last night she didnt go down until 10:00 so we were at it for hours.  I know she is exhausted, for example today she's been up for 4 hours straight but I've been trying to get her down for the last 2.5!

  • I agree with experimenting with times a little. Our DD's bedtime was 11 for awhile. We tried pushing it earlier but it was a disaster so we gave up. Eventually we could tell she was getting tired earlier so we pushed it again and now she's doing 9pm consistently. Your LO just might not be ready for an earlier bedtime yet, I wouldn't try to force it.

  • our DS fights bedtime too... We have the exact same issue - he sleeps well at naps and lets us put him down.. no crying, but just wait until 7pm rolls around. He cries and cries. We have been trying to keep him in the room/crib, but walking is usually the only thing that will calm him down. Just now he went down after almost 3 hours of trying... and it was walking that did it.

  • Yeah, our DD will go down between 9 and 10:30, which is fine with me.  She sleeps through the night until around 9:30am when I wake her up.  Our son goes to bed around 8 or 8:30 at the latest and sleeps until 8:30am.  If she is up a bit later, oh well lol.  Eventually we will change it up, but she is still so young I am not about to mess with her own schedule.  Especially since she sleeps the night!

  • We can certainly push the bedtime.... but I'll still have to figure out how to get her to nap during this time.  I am really trying not to keep her up for anything longer than 1.5 hours as she gets overly tired.

  • I'm not fighting the battle yet, honestly. With DS1 until he was 4 1/2 months, he stayed in our bedroom. We would do as we're doing now with DD:

7 pm bath, lotion massage, pajamas
    715 pm story, nurse
745 pm DD usually falls asleep, but we keep her with us in her rnp downstairs.
10 pm DH and I go upstairs to bed and bring DD with us. I will usually bf her again and lay her back down to fall asleep.

The kicker is that if she doesn't go to sleep after her bath I really don't sweat it. I'll go with her flow, but at 10 pm she needs to sleep and she most often does.

At 4 1/2 months with DS, we started sleep training and after his bedtime bath, story, nursing we put him down in his crib in his room from then on. He has been an awesome sleeper ever since. We'll do the same with DD. DS is 23 months and still sleeps 12 hours per night with a 3 hour nap every afternoon.

  • Ds2 cluster feeds at night so he's in thelliving room with us until 1030pm or 11pm. Dh feeds him at this time while I pump. Then we swaddle and he sleeps until 5am or later. I am up around 530am or so to pump anyhow.

Ds1 was the same and as he got older he went to bed earlier and earlier. Now at 26 months he usually sleeps from 730pm to 7am and still takes a two hour nap in the afternoon.
