Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Why is he not sleeping!?

My son is almost 2 years old and for the last month and a half-ish he is waking between 5 and 5:30am. He would usually be up between 6 and 7am. A week ago he was diagnosed with an ear infection and has been on antibiotics for it. There were maybe 2 days where he slept past 6 then he went downhill again.

I put him to bed around 7:45pm each night. It seems the later I put him down the earlier he is up...I've heard that some kids just need an earlier bedtime to help them sleep longer. I'm putting him down at 7pm tonight and seeing what happens.

FWIW, right now he is in his crib turned into a daybed. We just ordered his 'big bed' and it'll be here next week (my SIL said her kids slept better when they got in big beds...).

Any suggestions other than putting him to bed earlier are appreciated!

Re: Why is he not sleeping!?

  • Has the ear infection cleared up? If he stopped sleeping late when he developed the ear infection I would say that is the cause. Maybe wait a week or so and see if it improves as the ear infection cleans up. Some posters have talked about the toddler clock that turns a certain color when it's okay to get up. Maybe you could try one of those if he continues to get up early after a week or so.

  • My son had pink eye a few weeks ago and for about a week and a half afterwards he kept getting up an hour earlier than his bedtime. I cut his afternoon nap a little shorter, he had been sleeping longer and put him to bed at his regular time and he eventually started waking up at the normal time. Hopefully your LO will adjust back to the old wake time. Good luck.
