Job frustration

I went back to work this Wednesday. I am a reading intervention teacher at a charter school. My school does so many things that are wrong and I would love to leave but there are no other teaching jobs available. Yesterday Friday we had a potluck to celebrate the end of our mandated participation in secret Santa. My principal made sangria for the staff to drink during the day while we had students there. I am so appalled that she would do that. And what's worse is that in our handbook it says we can be at work drunk as long as its under .04. How crazy is that? My fianc and I are looking at what we can do so that I can leave but I will probably have to finish out the school year because we need the extra money to pay for our upcoming wedding.

Re: Job frustration

  • Yikes. I'd be talking to my union rep.

  • I realize that .04 isn't drunk I was half asleep when I typed that post. We don't have a union at my school. I couldn't believe how many teachers were ok with drinking while on the job. It still baffles me.
  • I know you said you don't have union at your school, but I would contact NEA and see if they could help. If they can't, then maybe they can point you in the right direction. Definitely not okay to be drinking while working with students. As a parent, I would not be okay with my child's teacher drinking, and as a teacher, I would not be okay drinking. Good luck, I hope you get out of there soon.

  • Wow. I have no words. Just wow. I thought charter schools were supposed to be "better" than just your everyday public school. Even though 0.04 isn't drink it's still drinking on the job. Which, in most places is grounds for termination.

Stick it out I guess and then find a new job for sure.

  • Charter schools have rules of their own. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. Personally I would be actively looking for a new job but finish the year if you don't find anything before then.

  • I'm a first time Mom, but I know that if I found out my son's teacher was drinking even one drink while on the job I would be livid. I would think a school district would also be unhappy given the legal implications if something were to happen and a teacher had any alcohol in their system. I hope you find a new job soon!
