Baby Names

Am I being stubborn?

Ok - so I thought DH and I had settled on naming our girl Fiona Jane or Fiona Grace and the name issue was done.

Then we were talking and I found the name Trinity and we thought how great - the number 3 has a lot of ties to us as a couple - and were thinking Trinity Grace or Trinity Jane or maybe Trinity Lynn.

Now that I think about it, I feel like Trinity makes people think of The Matrix, or Blade Trinity or other bad sci fi... am I insane?

I know Fiona has the Shrek reference, but it has Irish origins and I want to include my DH's heritage and Trinity just takes so much explaining, but DH really loves it.  Am I being stubborn by wanting to keep Fiona??

Re: Am I being stubborn?

  • When I hear the name Trinity I just think the parents wanted to use it for the religious significance.

  • Could you use both? Fiona Trinity?

I don't think of sci-fi but I do think it is a pretty religious name. Not that that's a bad thing, just what I think of first.

I think maybe you should sit with both names for a while. You don't need to make a decision right now, correct? As in, you aren't about to give birth this week or something, right? If you have some time, you might as well think about it more and mull over the options.

  • Oh - no rush no.  Not due until spring so we have time to be sure.

Thanks for the feedback!  We're not terribly religious so it was more from the number 3 that we took the significance...might need to just see what she looks like first.  LOL

  • I think you find a name you both love.

IMO Fiona is 1,000x better than Trinity - which I've never considered a classy name.

  • I wouldn't say you are being stubborn.  Personally, I do not like Trinity for a name, maybe that is why I am on your side.

Started TTCing a long arss time ago
  • i absolutely think of the Matrix. I also agree that Fiona ages much better than Trinity. not a fan of Trinity, its right up there with "destiny" and "Charity"

  • I also would think you picked the name for religious reasons.

I don't think you are being stubborn.  If you are not crazy about a name it should be off the table, regardless of reason.

  • You should both be completely on board with the name that you choose!

Just so you know, Trinity was one of the main serial killers on Dexter a few seasons ago. I can't imagine it's a dealbreaker for you, but that's my first association: John Lithgow violently killing a bunch of women.

This was the first thing I thought of as well!

  • I much prefer Fiona. Trinity makes me think of the Holy Trinity and that's just NMS.
  • I think Trinity is a pretty name but Fiona would fit an adult woman better.
  • I have never wrapped my head around Trinity as a name.  I don't know about sci-fi, but I study theology and I am not really keen on the idea of naming a child after the Godhead.  What bugs me actually isn't that people use a name with religious significance - if they did for that reason it would be okay - but that they seem to use it without any regard to the religious significance.  I don't assume that anyone names their child Trinity for religious reasons, because nobody I know, and no religious person I've heard about, has done so.  It just seems to be people who think Trinity sounds klassy.  I get the stripper vibe from it too, and it kind of bugs me that something I find personally meaningful has been reduced to that.

  • I'm going to be brutally honest:  the only little girls I've ever met named Trinity are the children of poor white trash or very religious poor white trash.

This always strikes me as a name that low class people use when they want to sound high class.  But, that may just be my perception or the trend in my area (mid-Atlantic region.)

Kids your child's age won't be all that concerned with Shrek, which will be an "old" movie by the time they're old enough to understand references like this.

I like Fiona a LOT better.

  • I like Fiona much more.
  • I think Fiona is way better than Trinity.  Trinity reminds me of the hoodrat girl that ends up being a stripper.  Fiona reminds me of Fiona Apple, not Shrek.  I think it's a great name, and much classier than Trinity.

Oh, thank goodness.  With all this holy trinity talk, I was beginning to think I was the only one who kinda ranked it with the name "Destiny" and not in a classy way.

All of this... And I would always think of The Matrix when I hear the name Trinity.

I think Fiona is miles and miles better than Trinity. I think Fiona grows well and I just can't picture a professional Trinity.

    I feel the same.

  • When I think of trinity, I think of the holy trinity. I would stick with Fiona Jane or Grace, both Jane and Grace have spiritual meanings as well.
  • I think Trinity is terrible as a first name. If your middle names Jane and Grace have no special significance, then compromise by doing Fiona Trinity.

  • Personally, I think Trinity is kind of a stripper-type name, so I'd definitely go back to Fiona!

  • If I hear of a person named Trinity I think they are religious, probably Catholic. Second, I would think of the Matrix.

  • Trinity as a first name is definitely klassy.  I think stripper, then Matrix, then religion.

Fiona does have the Shrek connection, but I never think of it unless someone points it out.  There is also Fiona Apple, Fiona from "Burn Notice" and there was a teen Fiona on an old Disney show called "So Weird".  There's also a really annoying dog at my park called Fiona.  Anyways, I think the name is out there enough that most people won't link it to anything in particular.

I do think Fiona Trinity flows well if you want to compromise.
