My toddler is getting chubby

Okay, I'm a little paranoid.  I read an article in Parents (or was it Parenting?) magazine about overweight children and the kid's diet was shockingly similar to J's.  Chicken nuggets, M&C, etc.

So I've been wholly better about feeding him healthy things and for snacks, giving zucchini bread (light on the sugar) and fruit rather than goldfish and stuff like that.

But I think he's actually starting to get a bit chubby.  I mean, chubbier than our chubby-but-getting-leaner toddler, if that makes sense.

I worry because of his past diet, the amount of TV he's had recently what with my pregnancy and then having a newborn AND MH was a fat kid.

Tell me that it's normal for 2 year olds to be a bit chubby.  Right?

  • Totally normal.  When did he go for his two-year check-up?  What percentile was he for height and weight?  I'm sure you have nothing to worry about, unless you've started dressing him in size 5 or something. Wilted Flower

  • I hope so! My DS is a big kid, and he always wants to eat. We do well with not giving him much crap, but despite him only being 21 months I am totally freaked that he is being set up to fight his weight for the rest of his life like MH and I do.  The ped keeps telling me that after he turns 2 he will do more growing up than out and that they are not concerned (he is about 35 lbs, 35 inches now), which I am waiting for. Sorry I don't have any advice, just that you are not alone in having concerns...

  • DD has always been so skinny, I HOPE she's chubby at some point! :)

As long as you are feeding him properly and he isn't only eating nuggets, M&C, and crap food, then he should be ok.  TV now with the new baby is a temporary thing, soon they will be playing tag around the house.  The most important thing is establishing healthy eating habits, though...

  • He's perfect.  I get those magazines, scan for Gymbo/J&J coupons and then throw them out, because they always leave me feeling badly about some choice that I've made.

Your doc (and I KNOW this) would have said something if he was even remotely worried about J's size.  The fact that your DH battled with this is enough motivation to make sure he's moving around a lot, and just keep an eye on it.

From the pics, and I said this initially, he looks perfect.  Like a two year old should.

  • I worry aobut this all the time.  K is in the 95% for everything!  She is already wearing 3T clothing, but it mostly for her height.  She is about 30-32 pounds.  She doesn't look chubby, but damn can she eat.  Of course I can't get her to eat veggies, but fruit she will eat.  I think as long as he is getting out and doing something, it will be alright.

  • He's probably getting ready to have a growth spurt.  My kids always look chubby to me right before they sprout up a couple inches.  He will thin out a lot before his 3rd birthday, too.
