Re: Reactions

  • At first my family was like "Oh, ya, that sounds....interesting." Once they saw what modern CD's look like and how easy it is, they were very impressed with them!  My dad admitted he felt bad for DS bc he thought I was putting him in those old plastic covers and using pins. Now a lot of my family members want to buy them for him for Christmas.

In public, I've gotten mixed reactions.  Both midwife and ped said they love CD's and recommend them often.  In the bathroom changing DS one time I got, "Oh you're one of those?"  Hmm wasn't sure what she meant but I just smiled.  Whatever!

  • We'll see how long THAT lasts!

I got that from all of my aunts and most of my friends with kids. We did the first 5 weeks in sposies; 7 weeks later, I will NEVER go back!

  • My dad thinks they're awesome. My mom thinks its disgusting. It took a few times of my sister and I explaining the cost difference before she understood a piece of why we prefer them.

My ILs are amazed by pocket diapers and AIOs. They tried to CD 25 years ago and said it wasn't worth all the work. BIL and his girlfriend want to use CDs on their kids now.

Some think they are awesome and others freak out about the poop factor. I just laugh because I gave my sister a ton of flack over using CDs before.

  • When I was pregnant, I got a lot of sarcastic "Well, good luck with that!" from most people.  Now that I am actually CDing, I get more "Good for you, but I could never do that."

My mom cloth diapered me and she thinks it's great.  She can't even get over my pocket diapers!  She had to use prefolds, pins and plastic pants so she is super impressed with the new styles we have. My BFF is also very supportive.  She plans to CD when she has children, so sometimes I talk to her about whatever I'm excited about in my stash at the time.  DH was on board from the beginning simply because of the cost savings and now that we use them, he loves them almost as much as I do!

  • My Grandma kept telling me that if she had a choice back in the day she wouldn't of chosen cloth. Granted this was back in the day of hand washing, line drying, and nothing but flats (aka the 60's). My Mom and Aunt both cloth diapered too, but they had a service. Once everyone saw what they were like they changed their minds about doing it all myself.

  • Last night I posted a picture on facebook of DS's new sunbaby that I am in love with. Its so adorable. Anyways, I was shocked to see that my cousin says something like this (wont let me copy and paste):

"What is that?? Reusable? Seriously Shay? OMG thats so gross why are you using that?! My gag reflex is soooo bad I couldnt handle it. You are so weird."

I was at first in awe that my almost 40 year old cousin was leaving me a comment that sounded as if she was 16 years old. Then I simply just replied with "It irks me when people are so ignorant about cloth diapering. If saving money, keeping my baby's bum healthy, and contributing towards a cleaner environment makes me weird then so be it."

Its funny how people think we swim our hands in poop and filth just because its cloth. I have actually yet to get poop on my hands and when I did it was when DS had a blow out in a sposie. Go figure!

  • My mom, cousin, and a girlfriend of mine were all pleased as punch. My mom ordered the flannel for our flats and made them herself, saying someone did that for her when she was expecting and she wanted to pay it forward.

My MIL thought I was nuts, insisted that when she watched DS he would be in disposables - made such a big deal about it that the other guests at one of my showers have all asked me since if she's changed a cloth diaper yet. (She has. And even said they were pretty easy to use!)

My brother said I wouldn't last three weeks. His wife thinks it's the grossest thing ever. I honestly kind of hope she has a kid with massive disposable diaper blowouts so she is constantly cleaning poop off clothing, sheets, swing, car seat, stroller, so I can wrinkle my nose and say "Gross" or recommend cloth to her. Haha.

Most of my friends said "Not for me, but more power to you."

DS's cardiologist was surprised when she saw him in a Flip diaper - "Oh, that's neat." His pediatrician hasn't said anything, but I imagine in this area she probably sees cloth diapers somewhat regularly.

  • I think my mom still thinks DH & I are crazy for using CDs. But my mom thinks I'm crazy for a lot of reasons so I don't let it bother me.

MIL can't get over how easy modern cloth diapers are since she used flats & plastic pants with DH and BIL in the 70s. She loves BG pockets.

This weekend I will be attending an annual gathering of some acquaintances and I know CD-ing will come up as last year both pregnant women (myself and another lady) were asked if we were among those crazy people that think they're going to use cloth diapers. Of course, one of the people asking does not have children and another one has a kid and for whatever reason gave up on cloth diapers. So I may have more to add after Saturday...

  • MIL was excited because someone had just been telling her about them.  She has yet to actually look at LOs diapers though.

My mom (who actually CD'ed 4 babies in the 80s) was skeptical.  She was definitely thinking of prefolds with pins and plastic pants, and I think she was worried that I wouldn't have time for that while working full-time.  Now she's more supportive, but not as much as I thought she'd be.

Daycare said "You do realize you will be bringing a bag of poopy diapers home don't you".  After a little over a week of using them, she told me this morning that she likes them because they are so soft & they hold poo in better than sposies!

DH was like "no way".  Now he loves them.  He actually texted me today and asked if I wanted to make a trip to our local CD store this weekend!

  • SIL is all about it.  She'll be CDing also and tried to talk me into it not knowing I had already planned on it.  H is on board because I think she trusts my judgement.  We haven't really told anyone else yet.

  • I have gotten both, but lately it is more, "Ah, I wish I could do that," or "wow, I can see that washing them isn't bad when you look at the savings". We have been working on DHs family for some time to be more accepting and it is working. My family didn't think we would stick to it, but in all are thrilled that we are saving so much. They just don't want to spray poopy diapers.

  • Honestly, I've not gotten any negative reactions. I told my dad we were CDing by showing DS wearing one. He thought they looked pretty neat compared to the cloth he knew growing up.

That said, I always put DS in a disposable if my dad watches him :)

  • I don't usually say much unless someone asks about them... then WATCH OUT!  I will tell them every single reason why cloth diapers is better than disposables!  I didn't say anything to anyone much until DD came because I had no idea how well they'd work... most people seem to think they're really cute and are surprised that they're easy to use.

The funniest comment I've ever gotten was "but... they poop in them and you'd have to change it" um ok, so you don't change your kid's disposable when he poops?

EDIT:  I've also had a lot of people say that they wished they had known about CDs when their kids were in diapers because they didn't know how easy they were... everyone pictures pins and plastic.

  • My family was all for it.  Everyone CD'ed so they've been supportive.  But my friends kind of scoffed and said I wouldn't stick with it.

I'm still pregnant but we've mentioned it to a few people and have gotten mixed reactions.  I really don't understand why other people get so upset over the way you want to diaper YOUR children.  I know we'll get some more flack once the babies arrive which I'm not looking forward too.  Hopefully it doesn't last, I just plan on ignoring it.

You'll probably get less when people see what it's all about.  A lot of people ask questions when they see how cute they are...but more in an "impressed way" has been my experience.

  • Both our families were supportive from the start since both my mom & MIL also CD'ed their kids.

DH was on board from the beginning, but he kinda thought I was a bit weird - now he is the biggest cloth diaper advocate!

Our ped & dr always comments on her 'fancy' diapers and about how 'more people  are using them these days' - which I find interesting, because I haven't met anyone IRL who CDs.

Our friends always comment about how cute they are and how much money we must be saving and commends us for CDing, but they wouldn't want to do it themselves. My one friend always asks me a ton of questions about CDs - she's very intrigued by them! (Even though she uses sposies on her kids).

Most people usually say how cute they are and said they wish they knew about them before they had kids. Oh and they always ask me where I get them from. I've actually been very pleasantly surprised by people's reactions - I expected them to be a lot more negative!
