Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

22 month old resisting nap

I don't know what to do about my son's naps. They are getting shorter and shorter unless I actually sleep with him. Today's nap was only 20 minutes and he wakes up crabby and clingy. I feel like he is too young to give up his nap but this has been going on for several weeks and its exhausting. I don't really want to nap with him everyday either as that's when I try to get my work done (I work from home.) I just am at a loss for what to try. Any suggestions?

Re: 22 month old resisting nap

  • Is he cutting teeth? Canines or molars can cause major napping problems and so can ear infections.

Honestly, I'd try a dose of motrin about 30-45 mintues before naptime and see if that helps. You can't do it every day, but at least you would know what the cause of it is.

    Good luck!

  • I posted this same questions a few days ago. My DS actually gave up his nap at 2 yr. right when my daughter was born! a few months before he's naps would get shorter and shoter and some times he wouldn't nap. I thought 2 was way too young but he hasn't napped since. My daughter is almost 20 months and has been a bear when it comes time for naps. Some days she won't nap others it takes her forever to go down and she's been waking up crabby. I did a little research and I guess there is something called the 18 month sleep regression. Google it...I'm going to keep putting her down the same time everyday and hope she eventually outgrows this! GL
  • I think this was around the age my daughter's nap went later.  I don't get it - she went from 7am wakup, 1pm nap, 8:30pm fall asleep (earlier bedtime) to a 7am wakeup, 2:30pm nap, 8:30pm fall asleep.
