.DD has ALWAYS had large tonsils, at times they are "kissing". She is a very loud sleeper/breather, babysitters and friends use to refer to her as "baby vader". She has also always drooled, and continues too (closing in on 2 in less than 2 weeks.)
A few days ago she stopped eating for the most part. this is not typical for her at all. Even her favorite foods, she has no interest in. She is still drinking, and I'm guilty now of giving her chocolate milk and cookies- anything to try to get her to eat. She still isn't really interested. I've noticed her doing this gulping type noise when shes not eating, as if shes having trouble swallowing, and her tonsils are huge, red, and completely touching-again.
I have taken her to the dr. before about her tonsils and they always say there is nothing they can do. I'm starting to wonder now that in combination with the ASD if this is effecting her sleeping (why she can't sleep through the night, wakes up crying, etc.), and if it could be impacting her speech.
I called this morning to make an appointment with the pedi again since shes still not eating, but since she has no other "real symptoms" and is urinating okay they said I could make an appointment but there isn't much they can do. I also mentioned that I have noticed she will at times zone out and have rigid movements/jerking. I can't figure out if this is ASD related or if there is a possibility she could be having petite mal seziures... either way the nurse taking hte appointment didn't even address that.
She has the appointment at the developmental pedi in Jan...should I just wait for that and let them address it and wait and see if she starts becoming interested in food again? Its like I suddenly feel like since DD has special needs her pediatrician is just blowing off everything... Its hard for me because I listend to "wait and see, she'll get there, everythings great" schpeel for so long and now that everything is not okay they have no answers for me or suggestions.
I hope this makes sense, I'm a little scattered today.
Thank you.
Re: Auntie or others
I would make an appointment with an ENT to discuss the tonsils. I'm shocked your pedi hasn't suggested it.
If they are so inflamed/swollen that she is having trouble eating then I would def make an appointment asap.
I agree. It sounds like those suckers need to come out. LA had a T and A this summer and, while the initial recovery was rough, it was soooooooo worth it!

Thanks ladies!
Heres the update -
Took A to her appointment, Pedi says tonsils are enormous and are occluding the back of her throat. That being said, she doesn't think thats a problem. She said that they aren't red, and don't have any ulcers. Pedi says she thinks the abrupt stopping in her eating is due to behavioral issues.
A is down 4lbs since her last visit in November, Pedi isn't concerned. Shes 26lbs now, about 33 inches tall. Pedi says shes doing great, no idea what she means by that, she slept from 2am to 7am and hadn't eaten in three days, losing weight...so I'm puzzled about what great means to her. She did give me a referal to an ENT, which I'm happy about...I'll feel better hearing she doesn't need them out from a specialist. Pedi says to limit milk and encourage eating, and we'll hook her up with OT if she needs it. A doesn't drink milk anymore without a LOT of encouragement so yeah...limiting it wouldn't be an issue.
She also gave me a cough syrup, which I am not giving her. She doesn't have a cough, her mucus membranes are always super dry (boogers like plaster, you wanted to know that right?), and I really don't want her on a bunch of stuff she doesn't need. She said it was for the antihistamine portion that perhaps that would bring down her tonsils.... There are other antihistamine compounds that don't have dextramorphan, pesudoephdrine and alochol.
I kind fo wanted to tell the her, "Yes, I trusted your "everything is fine" and "wait and see" approach, until I found out that everything wasn't fine and nothing got better." And perhaphs also mention "It took EI 10 mins watching her to see obvious impairments, which by the way you all brushed off, and never even suggested having her evaluated."
I guess I'm bitter.
Thanks again for everyones help
