    DD actually started calling him "Malkie," which I didn't love at first, but it's kind of growing on me for a nickname while he's little.

    Of course, we also call him "Malcatraz," from Being John Malcovich, which has now been shortened to "Traz," "Trazzie," and DD's favorite, "Malkie Trazzie Dinosaur."

    Mac is great!

    Don't worry about Firefly. It was a space-Western TV series by Joss Whedon (of Buffy fame) that was cancelled after one season. There was also a movie (Serenity) made to tie up some of its story lines. The main character was Malcolm Reynolds (Mal).

    It's big in geek circles, but not a pressing pop-culture concern.

    Oh my gosh, you little guy is precious! Now I like the name even more!

    I totally get the spinoff-spinoff nn thing. H used to call L Monkey, which turned into Monkey Trunks, and then just Trunks and Trunksy. It barely makes sense anymore.  ;)

    I didn't use to love this name, but (like others) after watching Firefly, it has definitely grown on me. I'd probably use Mac as a NN.

    I love this name!  I think it works equally well for a baby/little boy and a grown man.  It's very distinguished sounding to me.

    Well I love it (see siggy). He doesn't really have a nn (although I woudln't correct anyone that called him Mal or Colm). DH actually suggested Malcolm after re-watching Firefly on Netflix.
