I'm have my tour of the hospital tomorrow night. I really want to go natural so I want to be prepared. I'm working on a list of questions and here is what I have so far:
-How many support people can I bring into the delivery room?
-What is the hospital policy on IVs. Will a helplock be enough?
-What is the hospital policy on fetal monitoring?
Other than these three questions I'm drawing a blank. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Re: What Questions Should I ask on the Hospital Tour?
Hospital policy on food and drinks while in labour
Natural Birth Board FAQs
Cloth Diaper Review Sheet
Kangaroo care immediately after birth typical?
How long are you on the clock for?
Intermittent monitoring with doppler ok?
Are you confined to bed or allowed to get up and move? What dictates this?
I would also ask about c-section rate, if birth plans are generally encouraged (and if so what is preferred format and language), and do they have labor/delivery tubs available?
I'm not sure what else would come to mind, maybe breastfeeding support available.... things like that?
- If you don't get along with your nurse, can you request a different one?
- Are nurses trained to help women birth naturally? (i.e. do they learn coping techniques, are familiar with the benefits of changing positions, use of water, etc...)
- Do they have birthing balls / showers / tubs available for use?
- Lactation consultants on staff?
- Time limit after water breaks - 24 hours for active labor vs 24 hours for delivery
- Baby rooming in, standard newborn procedures, baths
