Running outside in cold temps

I'm loathing the treadmill, but it's getting awfully cold around here. I haven't the slightest clue what I should layer myself with to run outside in order to stay warm but still breathable. What do you wear? Brand preference? What's your minimum temp to run?

  • Running = defense mechanism only!

  • yikes!  who wants to run esp in the cold....

I tried this "running" thing once a few years ago....i ran for like 20 seconds....i have no stamina whatsoever

But the few people i see running in the col weather usually wear like spandex or something and ear muffs

  • If it's below 50, here's what I wear:

running tights (they even have some that are lined with fleece)

    A long-sleeved tech shirt

    If I don't have a long-sleeved shirt, I wear a short-sleeve tech shirt and Brooks arm warmers

A lightweight fleece North Face jacket similar to this one: https://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/womens-jackets-vests/womens-khumbu-jacket.html?from=subCat

    Tech socks

A moisture-wicking headband that covers the ears, similar to this one:

    Running gloves

A long list, I know, but I'm a wimp when it comes to running in cold weather. Good luck!

  • There are a lot of good fleece jackets built particularly for running. I used to wear my running shirt and then one of those,  gloves and a hat or headband warmer. You get warm pretty quickly which then balances it out.

  • I prefer to use Under Armor's Cold Gear as my base layer, although Nike's Dri-Fit is good too.  The key for me is light layers, nothing too heavy or bulky.  The biggest mistake I've made is dressing too warm.  You want to avoid sweating too much.  Runner's World website has some good cold weather running tips.
  • Thanks for the insight. I will have to do some research. I hate the treadmill. I just started running this summer. Hey, if zombieapocalypse does arrive and there are some fast ones...

  • To add to the question...I am a mouth breather and when I run in the cold, it kills my throat.  Anyone have any advice? Obviously I would breath with my mouth closed if I could!

I do too. And I have a front tooth that's sensitive to cold air. I wish I had an answer. Sorry, just commiserating.

  • I will usually wear winter tights (lined with a thin layer of microfleece), a long sleeved running shirt and a light running jacket.  Hands get thin running gloves and head gets a thin running hat.  I have a Pearl Izumi jacket that I use for running.  The sleeves zip off, so you can use it as a vest on not so cold days.

I would rather be a little chilly at the beginning of my run than overheating during my run.

I don't think there is any way possible that I could run and only breathe through my nose.  I need oxygen, dammit!

  • The Boston Marathon is in April, so we are forced to train in the cold around here!  I run warm though (I literally warm up like 3 minutes into my run.)  I love Under Armor tights and Lululemon tops.

I usually run in running tights, a long-sleeved Lulu top (the thin kind) and a vest with pockets. I then have a hat on and running gloves (both UA.)  I usually lose the gloves 5 minutes into the run, which is why I need the pockets on the vest.

If it's really cold I might wear a long-sleeve shirt and a Lulu jacket, like this:
