Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Diaper Problems!

DS has reached a point where diaper changing is like the ninth level of hell and next to impossible... you'd think we were killing him by the way he screams!

I'm not sure if I should take this as a sign that he is ready for potty training or just a phase, a really really really long phase... He doesn't seem that interested in his potty except to open and close the lid and he hasn't really taken to sitting on either his or the "big potty", but at the same time he doesn't want to have his diaper changed...ever...

However, we were hoping to at least start before baby #2 arrived...

Re: Diaper Problems!

  • We went through this phase too (12-16 months).  DD is much better now and likes to help by holding the diaper or the wipes.   Things that have helped:

    -  A high value item (like my blackberry or our home phone!)
    - having her help
    -  singing songs
    -  she is obsessed with her baby doll so sometimes I lay them both down togehter and change them  together.  Pointing out how the baby doll lies nice and still for her diaper change..
    -  sometimes resorted to standing diaper changes.

  • Phase -- DS is still hates having his diaper changed and he's 21 months old. I think they just don't want to slow down long enough to have it changed.
  • Our 20 month oold screams, cries, kicks his feet, or tries to get away from us whenever we change his diaper.  Things that have works:  1) a "new" toy he rarely sees; 2) television on in the background; 3) or a timeout when the screaming starts.

  • Story of my life! We try to help with distractions like holding the wipe or something, but honestly most of the time she just doesn't care. I only really care when it's a poopy diaper. haha. Sometimes we have to change the diaper standing up or sitting on my lap (rough), but I also have some slip on diapers when we are having a rough time too -- they cost a bit more, but sometimes are worth it! I hope it's a phase -- I think it's too early for mine to care about potty training (although we do sit her on it from time to time)...
