Birth Certificate

Major Confession: Mason is now over 16 months old, and I just finally got his birth certificate today. And I don't mean that I finally got a copy ... I finally actually signed his birth certificate and made it official. Want to know why it took so long? Because it was a pain in the a$$!!! It took 1 1/2 hours to get into Boston City Hall. It was a freezing cold walk in the city once I finally parked. Mason was miserable. It cost $62, and it will cost another $62 to add J as the father (he couldn't make it in with me today.) I paid $24 for one hour of city parking (no meters in that part of the city.) Then it took over two hours to get home in stupid traffic. With a miserable toddler. I am hoping that the hospital I deliver at this time makes it easier. Anyone else wait an extended time to file for their BC?

Re: Birth Certificate

  • Pretty sure they did it all at the hospital, and then I got it mailed to me a few weeks later?

I don't remember having to do anything else.

Wow, yes I think you did. I thought it was BS that we didn't automatically get a copy and I had to request one, but now I am glad it was all done at the hospital.  I think because we already knew her name our paperwork was all filled out before her birth.  Then after she was born they just inputted the date and time and it was done.  It did take me 11mo to get a copy though.  I lost the paperwork to mail-in a request and was to lazy to go to the registrars office and get one.

Yep, this for me too. You definitely got a raw deal there!

  • We still don't have one for DD. :(  All I have to do is write a check for $25 and mail it in, but I haven't done it. 17 months later.

  • They came around and got our info while we were in the hospital, but you have to actually go downtown to pay X amount of dollars to get your copy. And being downtown Chicago, we have very similar parking situations. However, it still sounds like you got the raw end of that deal.

  • We had to go and get Tim and Nicks. I'm pretty sure we did them together. So, yea Tim was a 20 months when I got his lol

  • The good thing is that now I can finally get a social security number for him. (Another process but it shouldn't be as bad.) Confession #2 - I still haven't done my taxes from 2011 because of this. Apparently, there is no penalty because I know that I don't owe money for taxes. I supposedly get back the same amount that I would have if I and filed on time. Hoping for a decent check because of LO, but I know that my maternity leave probably will impact the return by quite a bit. Did you all get a lot back in taxes by having a kid? I know that there a tons of factors, but can you just tell me if it was a significant increase?

  • Regarding taxes: yes! We got back 3x as much as usual. We turned in all the mileage to each doctors appointment which was 45 miles each way, so that helped too.

  • We filled everything out in the hospital and we're given paperwork to mail in to get copies.  I mailed it in when he was a few weeks old and got a couple of copies.

I'm surprised you didn't have a ssn or anything on him yet.  We needed DS's ssn for taxes (you stated you hadn't filed yet) and to get him put on our insurance.

I didn't need a SSN for insurance, and you can only get one if you have a birth certificate. I have felt this guilt for 16 months.

  • We didn't get DD's birth certificate until 10 or 11 months. We had to mail in a request form and check and were super lazy doing it.

This is what we did.  We filled out the paperwork before we were discharged.

I am almost positive that this is how it works at the hospital I will deliver at this time.

  • Oh my gosh! That sounds horrid! The only reason we have Emme's is because we needed it for her passport lol We filed it two months ago. Our experience wasn't awful but we did wait a long time to get it lol Hospitals here don't do it for you. They only give you a certificate of live birth.

  • We filled out all the paperwork in the hospital and then had to pay $20 at the Health Dept. to pick it up.

  • What a hassle.  BC recently made it so you can do it all online now.  Otherwise its paper forms you just fill out and mail in
