Schmogan

I hope you don't mind me calling you out, but I know you just recently weaned your LO, and I have a question about weaning at this age.  I am in the process of weaning, and I just have no idea how often or how much formula to offer LO through this process.  On the weekends, I currently BF my LO upon wake-up, before first nap, after first nap, before second nap, after second nap and then before bed.

I am assuming/hoping that once we transition to formula, she will not need to eat that frequently, and I can give her bigger bottles less often.  I am also hoping this is the case because she isn't really eating much regular food, and I always wonder if that's becuase she's full from nursing so often.

This is a long way of asking, if you don't mind, what is your feeding schedule like now?  and how did you transition?  Did you just replace each nursing session with a bottle?  How much did you put in the bottle?  Did that change throughout the weaning process?

TIA!!

Re: Schmogan

  • I am down to only nursing first thing in the morning, but that is more for my comfort.  I started by going down to morning, once in the afternoon, and before bed.  Then in between those 3 I would do 2 6oz bottles.  Now we are down to a nursing session in the morning, 3 6oz straw sippy cups during the day, and an 8oz bottle before bed.  So, here is our basic schedule...

    6:30am- Nurse

7am- Breakfast (granola bar and fruit)

10am- 6oz sippy cup of formula

12pm- lunch (whatever Logan and I are eating)

3pm- 6oz sippy cup of formula

6pm- Dinner (whatever we are eating) with a 6oz sippy of formula (most of the time he doesn't finish this so it could probably be 4oz)

9pm- 8oz bottle (now he is sttn since doing this bottle instead of nursing at bedtime Smile  Wish I had of started with this bottle right away cause clearly it helped his sleeping.)

Hope this helps!  Keep in mind that Kellen is 25lbs so if she is smaller you may have to alter the amounts of formula to that.  We use the sensitive stomach similac because that seemed to ease the transition from BM.  When we started the weaning process I was always making more formula than he needed and I slowly figured it out.

     Good Luck!!!

  • Thank you so much for your response!  This is very helpful!!  I think I'm going to try to keep the first morning nursing session for as long as I still have a supply, and it sounds like it's what you guys are doing too.  I really like the morning nursing.  It's the only time when she'll calmly nurse.  :)
