Preemies

So Proud!

Got the results from DDs in home First Steps eval, she is supposed to be hitting 3 month milestones due to being preemie, she is actually hitting 5 month milestones in most areas and 8-10 months in the others... Such a proud mommy!!! The only down side is now we have to wait 6 wks for her developmental specialist to refer her to ot for the sensory issue, but I can handle that.

Re: So Proud!

  • Wow that's amazing!  Congrats momma!  You SHOULD be proud!

We're getting our eval tomorrow afternoon!  I'm bummed to hear that's it's going to take so long for you guys to get OT - I had been wondering about that because we need PT asap.  I bet because of the holidays it's taking longer than usual.

    Anyway, congrats!

  • they said because the sensory thing is appearing to be preemie related she should grow out of it and they want to give it some time to see which direction its going to go before they do a referral, which I think is nuts, but her pedi said this developmental specialist is the best in the state at his job so I'm kind of leery having her switched, and to be honest the stuff he said was related to the sensory issue is stuff we have been dealing with for months and never thought it was anything beyond typical infant behavior. I just want someone working with her asap if it really is going to be an issue, so I'm not happy about basically being told "oh she has a problem, but we're going to wait 6 wks to see what happens before we do anything"

GL with your eval. I was so stressed about what they would say, I never expected the results we got.

  • I don't know about you guys, but this is our first child, so I spend a lot of time wondering whether this is just "typical infant behavior" or something more. Especially with my little guy and feeding - he's quite a difficult one to feed.  You guys have been struggling with sleep issues, right?  I think I remember reading about it over the weekend and the no tv suggestion.  I read your post out loud to DH b/c he lets DS watch TV way too often!!!  haha!   I hope your daughter does outgrow it before therapy gets involved though.  Sounds like she's doing great!

If you have a moment, can you tell me a little bit more about the eval process?  The woman who's coming to do it said, "it's okay if he falls asleep because he's so young." I'm just nervous if he gets cranky and doesn't cooperate!  Sorry - not trying to hijack your thread!!!

  • Ok, home now and can sit down and tell you what the process was like. (And yes we were having sleep issues, no tv and meds have helped drastically). If you haven't already done the phone portion, they will go over a list of things lo should be doing over the phone, took about 20 mins, mostly yes/no questions, but a few asking if lo does such and such thing frequently, sometimes or never. DD failed 3 sections on the phone interview due to the frequency questions. The next thing they do is have someone come to your home so you can fill out release forms, mostly for medical records, and go over income and the program, if you make more then a certain amount they bill you for any services required after the in home eval, but what you pay scales by how much you make. Finally they come do the in home eval, basically I just held DD while the lady offered her toys and moved them around while to see if she followed them, she talked the whole time to see if DD was responding to talking and trying to interact, she did about 2 mins of tummy time to check her core, upper body and neck strength, and then back to offering her toys. DD fell asleep about 20 mins before we were done, but the last 20 mins was just yes/no questions about different things she should be doing. All in all it took about 35 mins, 15 mins of play/interaction and 20 mins of answering questions, so really its not a big deal if they fall asleep, they take the results back to put in the computer and call you with the official computer print out scores, which they said they will be mailing to me (So getting framed! lol). Not sure how old your lo is, but depending on age, they told me there is so little they are expected to do that the younger they are the quicker it is and If something happens later on and DD does start falling behind we can have her reevaluated every 3 mos until shes 1 yo and then it goes to every 6 months until shes 3. Also they do adjust for prematurity, not sure if I said that, so even tho she's 5 mos actual they were scoring her on her adjusted age of 3 mos.

  • And she's my first, but DHs 3rd, so I was going by him and my nephew, who was also preemie for judging normal infant behavior.

  • Awesome!  Thank you sooo much for explaining it to me.  We do have the in home eval portion tomorrow, so I'm very glad to get a heads up on what it's all about.  My DS is 6 mos actual/2.5 mos adjusted...close to your's, so hopefully our evals will be similar in length and style.  I'm nervous!

Congrats again on your great scores!  :-)

TY again, and hopefully it is very similar since they should be evaluating him on a 2-3 month old level. Looking forward to hearing how your LO does! :)
