Lettuce..

For a salad. Do you use a knife to chop or tear with your hands?

Re: Lettuce..

  • I like to use a knife, but if I'm starving I'll just rip chunks.

  • When making a salad, I use a knife. For sandwiches I use my hands.

  • Depends on the type of lettuce.  Iceburg lettuce will brown almost as soon as you cut it, if you cut it with a metal knife.  Ceramic knives are supposed to stop that.  It is browning because the juices are reacting to the metallic surface of the knife.  But alas, I do not know a ceramic knife...

I buy Romaine lettuce normally and Romaine lettuce doesn't have that problem.  You can cut it with a knife and it'll take a few days to start showing that awful "browning."

I actually hate tearing lettuce, hence why I buy Romaine, so that I can always cut it with a knife. :)

  • The few times in my life that I have made salad, I have just used my hands.
