Kitchen for a 5 year old?

My DSD wants a kitchen this year for Christmas... I know she would play with one because she loves to play with her grocery cart and pretend food, but after shopping for Kitchens I can't seem to find one that would big enough for her! They all seem so short and made for 2-3 year olds... Any ideas for a taller sized kitchen that a 5 year old could get some use out of??

 TIA!

  • Ditto auntie.  Instead of getting her a play kitchen, get her a kids' cookbook, some kid-friendly utensils, and make the time in your real kitchen to let her help or play, whatever strikes her fancy.  If she doesn't want to cook with you, let her mix flour, food coloring, water, baking soda, vinegar, etc.  My kids are forever doing "science" experiments in the sink.  I just let them have at it as long as they clean up their tracks.

FWIW, we had a Little Tykes kitchen that we got as a hand-me-down.  When my DS was 2 and my DD was 6, we still kept the kitchen around, primarily for him.  But my DD played with it as well.  It never bothered her that it was "too small" for her.  She just sat or knelt at it.  So if you really want to get her a play kitchen, just get the one you think is really cool, even if it's small.  She probably won't care.

  • I absolutely agree that it's time for real kitchen tools.  An apron, kid sized tools, a cookbook, or even a list of recipes for the two of you to make.  Cookie in a jar kits are perfect for this age.
