C-sections

Was anyone else told next CS would be at 38 weeks?

When I had my first c-section, there were some complications. I was advised that for any future pregnancies I would have to have an RCS at 38 weeks. I had an emergency c/s and the baby was already part way through the birth canal which lead to some complications.

To my understanding, I was bleeding and they stapled me up quickly, didn't do as much suturing as they normally would and the result is that I shouldn't go past 38 weeks in the future.  Does this sound right? I feel a little foggy on the details, obviously I'll check it out with my doctor when I get pregnant again but I was just curious if anyone else had this advice? I would love to go longer, if I can.

  • A lot of hospitals are refusing elective/repeat c-section before 39 weeks.  Maybe get your operative report and a second opinion?

  • No, it doesn't sound right. If they screwed up your surgery that badly, I'd be seriously checking into your report and probably finding another doctor. Yikes!

This.  My OB said if we do a RCS, I can pick any date AFTER 39 weeks.

  • I also had an emergency c-section, after a Zavanelli maneuver (DS's head was mostly out and they had to push him back in because of shoulder dystocia).  They still stitched me up as if it had been a normal c-section as far as I am aware, and this RCS is scheduled for 39w1d.  My OB doesn't schedule c-sections prior to 39w.

  • Yup. Mine is due to the type of internal incision that I have. Medically, if your dr says 38w, insurance can't say no.

Based on that, I'm thinking there was more than just normal procedures done to stop the bleeding. Not that they did anything wrong, but that's it's not a case of the insurance/hospital saying no c/s before 39w.

  • Nope. I wasn't allowed to schedule my RCS for anything sooner than 39 weeks.

  • Thanks Ladies! I'm not even pregnant again yet but sometimes I just think about that and it seems wrong. We are in Canada so insurance is not the issue. I'll definitely get a second opinion when the time comes!
