BF mamas: I have a few questions...

I pretty much EBF, we have only been apart for about 2 or 3 days over the past 6 mos and I pumped while we were apart.  I have a couple problems that I am looking for advice on:

 1) I came down with a UTI last Thursday, the Dr put me on a L3 RX, which gave DS diarrhea and tummy issues - So I decided to "pump and dump" Saturday to see if he was better.  He had another bad diaper saturday then he was fine.  (was feeding him pumped milk from my stash and some formula here and there.)  Well, I rarely pump so I was absolutely miserable with full breasts, unable to drain and clogged ducts. UGH!  So, I decided to ditch the RX and will call Dr. today to see about getting on a safer one for DS.  ANYWAY, now DS prefers a bottle!  I don't know what to do...

 

2)  Night issues: DS is still waking 3x/night and wetting thru his diapers almost everynight.  (using pampers baby dry)  I have tried going up in size, no dice.  I am waiting on huggies overnites to arrive (hoping that they work.) DH insists that he needs to be on formula and that the problem is my milk. =( So I have no support in the BFing dept.

I would be patient with the breastfeeding/bottle preference. My son has been getting bottles since he was three days old, and while he generally manages to go back and forth between breast and bottle, he had a nursing strike at three months that was very frustrating - he refused to nurse but would take the bottle no problem. I found that if I nursed him in his sleep, or caught him just as he woke up from a nap, I could get him to nurse quite easily. I had to employ a few other tricks, but we got through it just fine. I am sure your son will, too.

As for the night waking/diaper thing - ugh. Sleeping through the night is a developmental thing. Some babies do it earlier than others. There are plenty of formula fed babies who wake frequently and have poor sleep. My son is breastfed and some nights he sleeps 8+ hours, some nights he doesn't. It's just what babies do. I have no idea what to tell you about the diaper issue because we use cloth, and if I'm up to feed him I will change him.

I am so sorry that you don't have your dh's support with breastfeeding ! That must really stink. :
Regarding his comment that if the baby was on formula he would not be peeing through diapers... That's insane and totally not based on anything to do w science. I don't know how to best set him straight on this one without being rude [bc I would probably just say to my dh "you are insane!"]. Where did he get this idea from?

Re the botles, what size nipple are you using? Make sure it's a one... That is the size bf babies need to minimize confusion or preference. It might take them longer to finish the bottle but that's ok bc it's best for your nursing relationship.

Switch out the nipples today [if they are not using ones] and be persistant about nursing and you should get through it in a day or so. Look up nursing strikes on kellymom for more ideas. Good luck!

Your DH needs some serious education in the baby feeding department if he thinks there is something "wrong" with your milk.

 ETA - my EBF daughter still wakes 2-3 x /.night to nurse and her diaper is brimming over in the morning.  It's just normal.  I don't mind the odd leaks - I don't think it's the end of the world.

 And really, I'm sorry your DH isn't more supportive.  That just wouldn't fly for me.

We've only had to use a bottle for a few days so I really don't have any advice there.

As for STTN and full diapers, that has nothing to do with BFing! DS gets up once, sometimes twice in the night. But he's had a cold, plus wakes to work on crawling, plus I think going through a growth spurt, so he's been waking more frequently for the last few nights. I'm also of the mind that STTN a developmental milestone, so I'm prefectly comfortable with DS waking.

His diapers are full in the morning. If he's slept the majority of the night on his belly, he leaks. I've found, though, that his big pees are in the morning, so changing him through the night isn't helpful. If he wakes up early but I know he'll go back down, I change him then and we usually avoid a leak.

FWIW, my friend FF and she said that when her DD started sleeping on her belly and was really active in her crib, they had leaks, too. Once moving around was less exciting, the leaks stopped.

FWIW, I hate pampers baby dry! We use pampers swaddlers, but the baby dry diapers are awful.

Your milk is definitely enough! Sometimes I find articles online and send them to my husband because he'll listen to that more than me! Keep doing what is best for baby

How frustrating.  What's going on has NOTHING to do with your milk and the fact that DH doesn't get that has to be infuriating.  I know I'd be mad.  DD here still wakes a few times a night and is usually soaked in the morning but we've found a cloth solution that seems to work for us, plus she's a back sleeper so I feel like that helps.  Still, BF babies wake more often because breastmilk is digested a lot faster. Because it was made for baby.  I have to remind my DH of that sometimes too when he watches her overnight and she's up more than she would be on formula (though for him it's usually only a time or two).  Keep up the good work and tell DH to shut his trap.

My good friend FF both of her babes from birth and both didnt STTN until after they turned two, so BF has nothing to do with it.  As far as leaking diapers have you thought about switching to cloth?  If not, you could buy a cloth Fleese soaker over your disposable or cloth diaper.

 I also recommend wool soakers.  Fleece has done the trick for us though!

1. Did you use the lowest size nipple possible? Make sure you do when using a bottle so its slow. I would just keep offering him the breast. He'll get back to normal. 

2. Start trying different diapers. My boys seriously have 10lb diapers in hte mornings. It's crazy. With ds1, baby drys worked awesome. With ds2, the baby drys didn't work and I used costco brand (like huggies). Now he uses pamper cruisers. He's become allergic to most other diapers. With ds3, baby drys work great. Make sure you point his little penis down too. This will help to keep most of the pee in the more absorption area.
