Natural Birth

GD and Natural birth

Really beginning to lose hope for our natural birth plan. Tonight was our last night of Bradley. We went in low risk and now are high risk due to GD. Even with meds I'm having a hard time controlling my levels. Even though I know the growth U/S can be very, very off I can't help but get discouraged every time they point out baby's fat belly. Just need some reassurance from people who have been here. I want a natural birth so badly but every week seems to bring some new challenge to that. I feel doomed to a C/S even though I know it's not necessary or even recommended just b/c of GD. But it's like this pregnancy is beating me down slowly but surely and I feel like by the time I'm 37 weeks and the OB suggests a C/S I'll just be so discouraged I'll just agree... :'(

Re: GD and Natural birth

  • If you're able to start labor spontaneously I believe you can still proceed naturally. I am not aware of all the risks but I know that you can't attempt a home birth with GD. There are risks and they usually try to induce at 39 weeks. Try to naturally induce by having sex, spicy food, big meals, etc. Also, keep the faith and relax as you can. I hope you can have as natural of a birth as possible and that you'll have a happy healthy baby.

  • I had GD with my son. At 38w 2d the u/s tech estimated my son to weigh 8 pounds. That u/s was actually a bpp, that was done at the same time as an NST. The next day I was induced, and my son weighed just under 8 pounds. It was a med free delivery. It can be done. :)

I wonder how much he would have weighed had he gone to 40 (or more!) weeks.

  • I have type 1, 37 weeks and 2 days now...had my u/s yesterday and Dr said my guy is about 8lb 4oz.  Told me he wasn't too big that I couldn't try to push so as long as my little guy isn't late I'll be able to go natural.

My sugar levels have been good but I did have a few weeks where they just would not stay under control so you could still go on to get back on track and everything will be fine.  Keep your head up and try not to stress too much

  • I had g/d that wasn't found until I was like 34 weeks with my second son. I didn't have that much of an issue with my levels once in awhile they were high but I wasn't on insulin. My first son was 9lbs 2oz and a week late, they told me repeatedly that he didn't look that big on the ultrasound. He was delivered naturally. They told me many times with my second that he was going to be large (over 10lbs) and got really concerned when he to was a few days late. I delivered him naturally at about a week late and he was only 8lbs. I think personally I would always try to go with natural first they can't really tell you how big the baby is or how difficult the labour is going to be until it happens. Both of my boys were fairly short labor by the way and were pretty easy to deliver.
