C-sections

What to eat before C-section?

Any recommendations? I'll be eating dinner, then a snack at like 2:00 am, and then C-section next day at 11:30 a.m.

Before labor last time I had something really plain, like chicken and brown rice. Should I do the same? or doesn't it really matter? Guessing nothing too acidic or gassy (i.e. no big bowl of chili!)?

Re: What to eat before C-section?

  • With my second c-section (first was an emergency) I wasn't given any guidelines at all except timing, so at midnight I had nachos! Probably not the best thing to have, but that's what I was hungry for. I would go for something that will sit well in your stomach, well balanced and all that.

  • Mine was scheduled and we ended up going out for sushi. I had dinner at 7 PM and it was scheduled for 9 AM the next day. I didn't snack between dinner and the surgery. It was fine, although I was STARVING after surgery and being put on a liquid diet was frustrating.

  • Yesterday I ate whatever I wanted (including a donair) and today I'm going to take it light and easy (i'm booked for tomorrow at 6:30am). I'll have a snack probably at 10pm tonight and then after midnight I can't eat or drink. I think drinking will be the hardest. I've been drinking a lot of water with this pregnancy.

  • I would eat something that is high in fiber that will keep you full until you have surgery, but not something greasy or heavy, if that makes sense
  • My mom made me a gigantic breakfast at 11:30 pm

  • Mine was scheduled for 10 AM and the night before my husband made caprese paninis, my favorite food ever.

  • i'm meeting with my OB soon again and i'll ask what time i have to stop eating. i'd imagine i'd have to stop at midnight as i'll be in the hospital at 630am the next day...i can't imagine i'll sleep much the night before so i'll eat as late as i can i guess - around 9 for a snack. fruit and yogurt or a smoothie with fibre

  • I say eat whatever you want!  Just stick to the timing given to you by your OB/hospital.  If it's something that's apt to give you heartburn, take it with your normal heartburn meds if need be.

I'm thinking I want to go out for something pretty fancy if possible, or maybe I'll have my mom make me the same meal I had on my birthday before DS was born (I went into labor at midnight the night of my birthday), because that is my all-time favorite, braised beef over mashed potatoes.

  • I had a sub followed by a chocolate chip cookie for dinner 24 hours prior and french toast & eggs with coffee the next morning (12 hours prior). I couldn't have anything the rest of the day but don't recall being too hungry with nauseau from the contractions. The anesthesiologiest wasn't thrilled that I'd had so much to eat for breakfast when he arrived to place the epidural!
