Preemies

What kind of pump are you using?

Hi Ladies,

Right now, I'm pumping 8-10 times a day, and attempting to breastfeed my 6 week LO (she is 38 weeks old tomorrow).  I'm using a Medela Freestyle which I used 4 years ago to pump (at work only) with my son.  I've had two LC's tell me I should be using the Symphony pump instead because I am pumping 24/7, and I am curious -- for those pumping all day and night, what pump are you using?

Also, any tips for not getting sore? I'm pumping ALL the time, my boobs are sore, then when I try to BF my daughter it hurts :(

Thanks :)

  • i am renting the symphony and there is a noticeable difference between that and my PISA. its totally worth every penny to rent. I am using coconut oil when i pump and afterwards and that seems to help the soreness. i think we are still going to be sore but at least that makes a difference.

    good luck

  • I rented a Symphony from the hospital since my insurance is reimbursing me for the entire rental.  Give your insurance a call to see if they might do this for you, especially since  you have a preemie!  I am not sore any more and I think I just pushed through it when I was... sorry I don't have any advice on that!

  • Yup, I echo PPs. I've had great luck with the Symphony combined with liberal usage of Lansinoh. My nipples are still a little tender, but I have to imagine that's to be expected. They're not really sore or anything.

  • Thanks everyone! I now plan on renting the Symphony this week, it seems it worked best for all of you.  I've started to notice a slight decrease in production pumping 3 hrs a day (it's all I can do since I have two other toddlers and just can not find the time to pump every 2 hrs), but it could be because I have a cold too.

    I can't wait for spring :)

    Thanks again!

  • I am using both right now.  At the NICU I use the symphony with the preemie setting and at home I am using the pump in style.  I honestly don't notice much of a difference but I have only been pumping for 8 days.  I get the same amount per pumping with both in the same amount of time.

As for soreness I use the lanolin and normal saline soaks.  My LC made me up so gauze soaked in the NS.  The NS helped a ton when I had some bleeding from one nipple. You can either ask a LC for the normal saline or you can actually make some yourself.  Good luck!
