IUI with Low Sperm Count Success?

Hi Ladies,I'm new to the bump in general, and not quite sure where to post this. I have been spending most of my time at TTTC. DH and I have been ttc for over a year and a half and had our first IUI this morning. The RE said his sperm count was considered low today, it was 14 million and motility was good, but she didn't really say how that affects our chance of success. I'm wondering if any of you have insight to share about this. Any BFP stories with low sperm count would be great to hear as well! Thanks for any input!

Re: IUI with Low Sperm Count Success?

  • So, was it 14 million pre or post-wash? If you look at literature, post-wash counts of 10 million + have the best success rates, and there's very little difference in success rates if you have 10 million or 100 million. 10 million seems to be the threshold for best success rates. So if it was post-wash, I think you are in a good spot.

Thanks for the response! I'm going to guess that it was post-wash because I think she said it was what was in the tube that I checked and his SA was over 100 million. I'm happy to hear that over 10 million has good success rates.

  • I wish I could remember the numbers for our IUI, but DH has low count, motility, and morphing and our worked on the first go. I also have PCOS and was on Femara, so if your systems are normal functioning you have better chances than I did. GL to you and I hope it works out!!

  • None of my three IUIs were successful but they were done with 6, 4.5, and 8 million motile respectively so 14 million sounds fine to me.  Good luck!
  • I got KU the first time with only one million total motile sperm. My RE says she likes to see 5 to 10 million total motile and they don't see any improvement in success rates with more than 10 million. Good luck!!

ETA... To clarify, I mean your chances with 10 mil are just as good wih 14 mil. So sounds like you had plenty!

  • Thanks for the responses ladies!  You have really helped me feel better. It sounds like the RE had me worried for no reason, I guess I heard the words "lower than normal" and got nervous. Either way, what's done is done and hopefully it worked. I appreciate the feedback!

  • Our counts were a lot lower than yours it sounds like.  DH never had more than 3.7 million.  We had to move on to IVF with ICSI.  Pregnant with our 3rd that way now.
