Adoption

IA: applying for grants

Has anyone or does anyone plan on applying for grants to help fund your adoption? I've been looking into them but was wondering if anyone had personal experience or info they could share. I would think it would be worth a shot applying for them but I'm not sure how realistic it is actually being approved. I'm starting to have flashbacks of applying for scholarships for college. LOL. Any information is helpful as we are in the very early stages of this journey. TIA

Re: IA: applying for grants

  • I am in a similar situation, we have found about 5 grant organizations that we would be eligible for but you can't apply until you are home study approved.  Our agency has a grant for children with special needs but although we are definitely eligible they can't guarantee we would receive anything, and if we do it can range from $500 to $5,000.

We are currently on hold, saving money, and keeping an eye on what ends up happening with the tax credit  : /

  • We have applied to a number of grants and haven't received any. Hoping we'll get at least one (we have 3 we're waiting to hear back from).

After searching and searching, back with Uganda but with our homestudy agency's program.

  • This really isn't 'grant' related but more refund related, I guess?  My husband is a manager at Wendys and one of his managers actually adopted a sweet little girl like 3 years ago and since Dave Thomas was adopted, they give their managers (and maybe employees?) a refund.  I know she had to turn in her receipts, but she ended up getting back a little over $11,000 which I was SHOCKED about!

Like I said, not really a grant AND you would have to have someone working at Wendys, but it's always an option!

This is why I love Wendy's, Dave Thomas was an amazing guy and their foundation does awesome work.

  • We found out grants are REALLY hard to get. Through the military we get a $2000 reimbursement, and our accountant that we've been working closely with has confirmed that we'd get a $11-13,000 tax credit back the following year.

We are also military and looking forward to that reimbursement! Also, I'm excited to see another military family adopting. I feel like we are the ONLY ones, as I know nobody in real life that is military that has adopted. I'm excited...LOL.
