Trouble TTC

How many?

How many of you lovely ladies have changed the number of children you'd like due to T-TTC? DH and I had a huge talk after TTA for the last 2 months due to martial issues. After seeing a therapist we decided next April is going to be our month starting up again. This brings me to my question, we went from wanting 2 back-to-back to choosing 1 pregnancy, if that pregnancy brings twins from IUI/IVF then we will be closing shop.

Re: How many?

  • We he have always debated between one and 2.  Now I feel like it is too early to have that conversation until we figure out how to conceive Baby #1.  We can talk all we want but I now realize it is out of our control and in God's hands to give me the gift of a baby and motherhood on His schedule, not mine.  That being said, the most we've talked about is that if we have twins, we would probably be done, because we never really talked about having more than 2 kids.

    Oct 12 - Jan 14: 3 clomid/TI cycles, 2 hysteroscopies, 2 IUIs, 1 BFP (MMC @ 12w), 2 more IUIs
    Feb 14: Gonal-f + IUI #5 = BFP! (EDD 11/4/14)
    Baby boy arrived 11/13/14!

  • Yes. We used to want at least 2, but now I've decided I'd be completely content with (and would actually prefer) just 1. If we had twins, great, that takes care of that one.

I'm 33, DH is 39 - we aren't really young anymore. I have no idea how long it will take for me to have a successful pregnancy - I might be 35 by the time I have my first, which is okay. But to be honest, I don't want to have to go through this again, especially with PCOS + possible AMA going for me. I would have wanted to wait 2 years between children, but that doesn't seem likely anymore as I get older. It isn't that I think I'd be too old to conceive, I just don't think I would have the energy or will to deal with TTC. Perhaps I could get lucky and we'll be KU sooner than later, but probably not.

  • We haven't changed - both DH and I feel that siblings are important (he has a twin sis and I have 3 bros).  He has always said 2 kids and I have always said 2-4 (I like ranges).  He wants us to try having kids together.  Ideally in my world we would have kids and adopt (2 of my bros were adopted and I couldn't imagine my life without them).  Time will tell what happens for us though....

We thought that way too - There are no small children in our family and we are in limbo. DH and I are the oldest on our side of immediately family so we debate going back/forth with how this might affect the child growing up. My brother and his SIL are nowhere near having children and our cousins are too far apart in age to have them grow up without other children around. For right now we just want to focus on one.

DH is 35 and I'm 31 so depending on when it happens for us, we are in the same boat. I don't know if emotionally I'll be able to go through the fertility treatments again. Wishing you the best of luck for sonner than later :)

  • We wanted two.  If we get twins from IUI or IVF - great!  If we only get one LO out of treatment then we probably will not pursue a second child.  However if we have frosties from IVF - I think if we had a singleton we'd try for a sibling.  Basically, I know that things change so I try not to discount what may happen down the road.  For all I know come this time next year I could be a parent to one, two, three kids or be finally ready to live life CFNBC.  All I know is 2013 is the make or break year.

Originally DH and I wanted about 4 kids. Although he actually wanted 6 (he comes from a big family) but I'm so petite that I nixed that one really early on haha I told him for every year we weren't married the number went down by one. So we got down to 4. But at this point, we'll be happy with just one. Just one healthy child would be enough. I will never get back on BCP's so if we end up with a second or third then that'll be fantastic, and then we'll discuss BC options from there. But it's been such a tough road so far I doubt we'll really ever have to worry about it.

The grand plan is to one day have our own kids, and then foster/adopt older children and have a kennel so they can learn responsibility and a form of animal therapy. I think having those kids work with dogs will help give them a sense of pride, accomplishment, and love. All parties benefit in my mind.

  • It depends on  how much longer it takes us to get one! We have been trying for 2.5 years.  My main focus is on 1!! I seriously pray to God and say that I would be happy with just one!!  If that is all I can have I will be happy!  I am soo scared I will not even have one.. Soo after we have one I will probably stop doing treatments.  If we get pregnant again, we get pregnant again.  I just don't know if I can mentally go through all this again.  It has taken over my whole life and I hate it.  I wish I could go back to how I felt before we started trying.  We wanted 3 kids but I don't think that will happen.  I hope it can but doubt it with how low my AMH is : ( ..

  • Before we started TTC (and for several months into TTC) DH and I were both ADAMANT that we wanted exactly 2 kids. We are both only children and would prefer that we have 2, as we both felt alot of loneliness being the only growing up. But now, if we could even just get one kid I will not be caring about trying for a second. Especially since we are considering adoption right now and that is expensive too, we will not be going to any lengths to have a second child. If some miracle happens, then cool, otherwise I will be fine with one. I'm even starting to wonder if I could be okay with none and just get more guinea pigs.Stick out tongue

  • I have always been dead set on 2.  DH has always wanted 1 only.  We have debated back and forth, and truth be told, if I wanted 2 I know he'd be happy to have 2 as well...but now, my mind is slowly going to "one and done."  This is emotionally way too hard on me.  It is even starting to affect how I act at work (tears at the mention of others being pregnant).  As you can see from my siggy - DH isn't getting any younger (nor am I) and he's fearful of having children too much past 40 - he doesn't want to be an "old dad" as he calls it.  We'll see - but right now, as I type this - I am okay with saying one...

  • I always thought it was important for a child to have siblings, but after everything that we have been through- we've decided that if we only have 1, we are fine with that. I can't imagine going through this again. I had no idea how many people felt this same way until I saw the responses!!

  • imagerox825:
I used to think 2, but at this point we'll be thrilled with one! We've talked about being content with one, would probably not avoid anymore just in case, but would not go through infertility treatment again.

This we always said at least one! Now if we could get one here I would be content with that and thank God and count our blessings! If we get twins we would be doubled bless and just be thankful! We will not do IF treatments for a second though to hard on my body and on the two of us!

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'
