Trouble TTC

Prebaby Buys

just wanted to vent a little here. and see if anyone else is doing the same thing. ever since we've been ttcing, I've been buying a little here a little there for our future LO. nothing big or extravagant, mostly things I see at a rummage sales or on clearance racks. after about a year of TTCing and no BFP I kind of got in a little funk and gave half my stuff away to friends who were expecting. now that I know I have PCOS and we've started our treatments, I have gotten a boost ofof positivity and went back to making pretty baby purchases. I kind of got too excited on the Black Friday/ Cyber Monday sales and spent a little more. Plus recently I've looked into purchasing a few cloth diapers so that we can build our stash overtime. hubby thinks I may be going overboard since we haven't even conceived yet. I tell him it's just stuff we'll eventually need and since I got them for cheap it'll save us money in the long run. anyway, just want to know if anybody else does pre baby buys. or is this just setting me up for more stress if BFN?

Re: Prebaby Buys

  • I won't buy anything until I at least get a bfp. I wouldn't want to get my hopes up or have to see little reminders around my house. I'm sure there are people that do this kind of thing, and there really isn't anything wrong with it, but I don't want to do the whole cart before the horse thing.
trying for #1 since May 2012... we're adopting! bringing home baby boy in january 2015!

  • I do the same thing!!
I remember right after I got my dx of pcos I was in Target and wanted to buy baby socks. DH was really annoyed and said no. I broke down and started yelling and crying that he didn't want babies, right there in the aisle.

    Obviously we got the socks.

But I don't think it's bad, just as long as you keep the mindset that these things are for later. If you start thinking about needing them in 10,11 or 12 months, your bfn is going to disappoint you.
It gives us a sense of hope and purpose, as well as a finish line for this crazy race!

Edit: I suck at typing on my phone.

  • For me it's just a set up for greater disappointment, so I'll refrain from buying anything until we've had a successful treatment

  • Maybe if I see something unusual, or time/place specific that I thought I might not have a chance to get again I would buy it, but I can't imagine buying normal baby stuff now. It's already tough enough to struggle with IF, I don't want to have baby stuff in my closet as a reminder.

  • I'm in the haven't bought anything group.  I'm hopeful that treatment will work, but at the same time I can't help but think that one year from now I could be sitting here with multiple failed medicated cycles, multiple failed IUIs, a couple of failed IVF attempts... and if that's the case and a baby is not in the cards for us, having baby stuff around would only make the disappointment worse for me.

I have purchased 1 picture to hang on the wall in a future child's room, only because it would work equally well in a nursery or in a 2 or 3 or 4 year old child's room, so if treatment doesn't work and we end up pursuing adoption it should be OK.

  • I picked up a tiny pair of sneakers at Target that I was thinking of using to tell DH when we get a BFP (if we get a BFP).  They are stashed in my car's glove compartment.  More than likely he will be with me when I get the RE call or pee on a stick, so I may not get to use them.  Although then I would like to take a picture for telling people with us in our running sneaks and then the baby sneaks.

July 2012 - Tests with RE confirmed PCOS and annovulation

Surprise BFP while on break cycle due to cysts.  It's a girl! Baby "E" born on Thanksgiving Day 11/28/13

  • I'm in the no purchase camp.  I have not bought a single thing.  I have had a few things given to me (We have our changing table in the guest BR and matching crib awaiting us in SILs basement for the last three years).  That is depressing enough to know that piece of furniture has been in my house since we were 6 months into TTC and it's still here...unused....to keep me from buying stuff.

I thought I might be a *little* different this upcoming IUI and buy a onsie.  As like a sign to karma that I do have hope.  But that is all I will allow myself to buy (and I honestly think I will return it if the cycle is a bust).   But as for things, I feel like - hey I'll have nine months to buy stuff after a BFP and I have tons of friends that have kids more than willing to give me baby stuff and shower me with presents after my long journey that I really don't need to go spending money on baby stuff when making the baby is costing us plenty OOP.

Does this count? This was my stash about a year ago. Add another 50% to what is here, plus a carseat, stroller, highchair and pack n play.

I, too, have a stroller, highchair, and pack n play. I only have these items because I'm a SAHW/Babysitter. The little girl that I babysit just celebrated her first birthday in October. She comes to our house everyday. I love her to pieces. It doesn't affect how I feel about our IF.

  • Most I have done is downloaded a baby names app.  But I won't let myself use it until I know we have a BFP.  My H and I play the game of naming our baby regularly, but we did that even before we were really TTC.  Usually we are throwing out ridiculous names that we really would never use, just for a laugh.

  • I have bought two packages of diapers....even though I'd prefer to cloth diaper...but they were free & too good a deal to pass up. Other than that, I'm so uber excited about having a baby and putting a registry together that I kinda feel that if I have everything I need already when I get pregnant then I'll miss out on the fun. Thats just me though and I know plenty of ladies that have the total opposite opinion and that is just fine as well :)  Have fun shopping :)

  • I bought a couple very small things a LONG time ago (like before we even started TTC) that were Eric Carle items (I love The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and I haven't bought anything else since. I gave those things to my mom for her to keep at her house so I don't have to see them. I feel like it will jinx me or make me too sad to buy stuff now. I don't want to look at it. And normally I do like to stock up on things to save money, so I get wanting to do that. But it's not for me.

    My Ovulation Chart

  • So I'm in the 'don't buy anything' group but I have bought stuff (mainly for gift baskets for 3 women in my life who are expecting) and I'm huge into couponing so if its free or almost free and it's not gonna expire, why not stock up for future use or future gifts.  My mom came across an heirloom quality cradle back when I was still living at home "just in case she has a grandchild some day..."

That cradle was then sitting in the garage of my house while hubby and I were trying on our own before needing medical intervention.  I remember it was our last month of trying before he would start chemo and I asked my mom and dad (hubby was recovering from surgery and not allowed to lift) to come over and bring it in the house to change our karma.  I felt like maybe somehow, if it was sitting out in the dirty garage amongst spiders and cob-webs, that subconsciously my mind would be telling my body that we weren't ready for a baby yet.  My dad got it up two flights of stairs to the guest bedroom (what would be a nursery eventually) and I cleaned it up and washed the sheet and put a baby blanket it in.  No luck.  But I feel better that its in the house and not exposed to the elements anymore.

    ??
Our little lightbulb is on the way!
