Climbing out of crib

Jonah can now climb out of his crib... I can't help to feel sad because now he can get out of his room whenever he feels like it!

But what now? Should I convert his crib to a toddler bed? I'm nervous if he's going to keep crawling over he'll hurt himself somehow. Ideas?!  Thanks!

Re: Climbing out of crib

  • No advice here.  Giselle tried climbing out of her crib once, she fell on to the floor & that really scared her.

  • Andrew hasn't climbed out yet, but once he does I guess we'll convert to the toddler bed.  I kind of dread that because I know we'll never keep him in it.  Do you have a convertible crib?  Looks like it may be time to move to the toddler bed.

  • Oh, that is rough.  We are not there yet, but I'm dreading the time when we are.  I'm guessing that duct taping him in bed would be frowned upon, so I'll have to figure something else out.  I'm just hoping he is sleeping through the night consistently before this time comes.

  • My daughter climbed out of her crib twice about a month ago, once in the morning (imagine my surprise, coming to get her in the morning and there she is sitting on the floor reading her books with a big ole' smile on her face) and then again later that day during nap time. I was all ready to get the bed rail and convert her bed into a toddler bed but then I decided to give it a few days, glad I did because she hasn't done it since! When she starts doing it on the regular though it is going to be time to switch everything over. I'd hate for her to get hurt trying to get out of her crib.

  • Thanks for the comments! Last night was a LONG night! He must have climbed out 9 times through out the night. I decided to convert to the toddler bed, but when I was half way through I had an idea. I removed the mattress support and rails, then put his mattress back in his crib. So it sits on the floor, but it's lowered enough where he can't climb out. It probably won't last too long, but it'll buy us more time before converting.

  • We took the side off of my son's bed a couple months ago. He is just too tall and typical-boy, so he can fall over the edge too easy. We taught him how to climb in and out of the bed on his own and he loves it! He feels like such a big boy, plus when he wakes up he can immediately begin to play with his toys, without crying for mommy. He has a chance top play for a little first thing, so now I'm woken up by the sounds of him playing and talking to his toys, rather than him screaming and crying! It was a simple choice for us. (True, I was a little sad... at first, but now I wouldn't go back if you paid me.)

  • My DD2 got out a couple months ago and it scared he so bad we were good for a while. I was really surprised when I walked in her room to trip over hr. She was clearly freaked out.

Then just last week she got out over and over and over again as we watched. It was horrible. She's sharing a room with DD1 and we're not ready for 2 in toddler beds yet. We ended up turning the crib around and that has helped some. We're going to have to try the mattress on the floor next if it will work....the crib we have might be just a tad too high so I might have to put a platform under it or something. Sigh....these kids.
