Multiples

Constipation woes

This is the 3rd week that I've had to take Miralax or else all that happens is balls.  The nurse wants me to start colace twice a day once the Miralax works.  I'm eating fiber and drinking as much water as I can stomach (still have slight morning sickness).  Sigh.  Any tips or tricks?  I'm just sick of being on pills for everything (multivitamin, zofran, iron (anemic from pregnancy) and now colace!)  I've never taken so much stuff in my life, seriously.

Re: Constipation woes

  • I don't have any tips/tricks, but wanted to say that I am in the same boat. I take colace twice a day and miralax occasionally. I hope it helps you more than it does me!

  • Oh, I hear your pain. Here's my routine (that my Dr approved for me):

I take 2 colace after every meal, and then I take 6 at bedtime.
Lots of water, as you're already doing.
A glass of warm juice (apple or pear works best) first thing in the morning.
1/4 cup sunflower seeds before bedtime.
I regularly eat fig newtons, oatmeal raisin cookies, molasses cookies, oatmeal, sliced peaches and pears, dried apricots, plums and figs, and trail mix heavy on the dried fruit and granola.

I also have a Squatty Potty (squattypotty.com), which is a foot stool that raises your feet up while you're on the pot. You don't actually squat on it, no agility required. I would look around at home for a footstool that can raise your feet up off the floor, it really does work.

When all that doesn't work, I do the following:
    Senna, 1 - 2 tabs, 1 - 2 times a week as needed.
Milk of Mag 2 capsules at bedtime 1 - 2 times a week, if needed.

  • Oh, girl. I remember those days well. Keep taking that Colace and I wish I had known about the Squatty Potty!!!
  • Ok, from my experience... Zofran and iron supplements back you up, to the point of misery.

The biggest mistake people make with Colace is that they only take it when they are in trouble and by that point it is too late, you have to take it consistently to really see the benefits from it.  I take 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night - it makes a HUGE difference.  Also, I was put on a regimen of Colace after my appendectomy in college, so I know how critical it is to take every dose for your routine to be effective.

As soon as I was able to stop taking Zofran for my horrendous m/s, I found out I was anemic so I started iron supplements - I only really had a break from the Colace for about 2 - 3 weeks.

Hope you get some relief soon!

  • I had to stop the zofran. It wasn't helping the ms enough to deal with the bathroom problems. It was terrible. They also changed my prenatal and I've been ok for almost a week. I feel your pain. I have never been thru anything like this before
  • I was the same way.  Zofran can really plug you up.  Colace helped with me.  A friend of mine did prune juice. She said it was gross but it worked.  Good Luck.

  • Try probiotics. They aid in digestion and keep things moving along. Get the good ones - they're refrigerated.

  • I'm in the same boat too. My doc suggested miralax 2 times a day until things get moving and then 2 times every other day with just once a day in between. It seems to not be too bad now other than not having the stomach muscles to go any ways.

  • Once you start taking the Colace I highly recommend taking them until after you give birth and have your first BM.  I had a c-section and that was hands down the worst part of it.  I wish I had been better about taking the Colace regularly.  It was uncomfortable and I cried I was in so much pain.

  • Thanks for the tips everyone!  I can't wait to be regular again!

  • I took Miralax every day while pregnant. It's perfectly safe to do so.
