Christenings....

I know a few of you had your babies christened this weekend!  Congradulations by the way!

I KNOW I need to do this but DH and I don't have a church home in Las Vegas or in Memphis.  For various reasons we just can't find one that we both agree on.  He was raised evangical and I was raised in a more traditional (aka boring & subdued) church.  Finding common ground is tough.  We don't want to worship seperately.

That being said we are hoping to have the babies christened the weekend after Christmas since we will have all of the family in town.  Of course for this we need a church!

Did anyone else have these types of troubles?  What did you do?  How old were your babies when you had them christened?

Re: Christenings....

  • We had both the girls and then our son christened when they turned 3 months old. There isn't any time restriction as far as I know.  I haven't found a church were we live that I feel a strong connection with so we decided to have both christenings done in the church we got married in so for us it was just about timing, since we had to travel and I wanted to get them both done before I had to return to work. Two other children were christened at the same time as DS, they were sister, when they told me that at 1st I thought they were going to be twins but one was 2yrs old and the other was 9 months old. Just be aware that some churched only have certain days that they do this. Ours only does them once a month.  Good Luck!

  • ask friends, or go on your local board- for a church recommendation.

we are very active in our church. Tons of parents come there to have their babies baptized and are not official members. Our pastor does ask the parents to meet with him once or twice to make sure they understand the true meaning behind baptism- but you don't need to be a member... though, usually the families do become members b/c they want to.

    good luck!

  • Hi

We had the babies Baptism at the church were we got married.  We live in WA, but I grew up in CA.  We were married at a beautiful church in CA, but were never 'members'.  I called the Pastor and told him that we have moved so often in the last 4 years that we didn't have a 'home' church.  Since our wedding was held at his church it was the most special church to us (even though we hadn't been there in 4 years).  He was cool with it.  Now I try to take the kids to a service there whenever we go home.  It is really nice.

  • I was freaking out about this a little too.  DH and I are both Catholic - his parents very religious, mine not so much - and we got married outdoors not by a roman catholic priest.

We never found a home parish when we moved 3 yrs ago and I thought we'd have to go for 6 months before they'd consider baptizing.  I research a few online, asked some friends / family and ended up calling one day to get info.  They scheduled it right there for 6 weeks out.  We've been going to mass weekly since then.  I have to say, getting there is not easy and is always a pain, but once we are there we really enjoy it.  It's the one hour of the week where we are a family, cuddling our girls w/o work, TVs, cell phones, etc interrupting.  We really like the people we've met so far too.

    Good luck!!!
