Cloth Diapering

Yeast and HE Washer HELP!!

Hey Mommies!
I need some serious help! I adore my cloth diapers! They have been great and I DO NOT want to go to disposables! So I am coming to you, because I am at a loss. My dd recently got a yeast rash. I'm worried the diapers are part of the problem. We put her in sposies for a few days, used monistat, and got rid of the rash. But a few days back in cloth and the rash was back. I have a HE washer, so maybe my problem is not enough water, but I need help. My wash routine at the moment is:
Cold wash, no soap
Sanitize wash, Charlies Soap
Rinse x 3 warm/cold

I have tried additives like Oxyclean, Baking Soda, and Vinegar sparingly, as I don't want to ruin anything.

Do any of you Mommies have HE washers that can give me some laundering advice?

We use microfleece/pul pockets, microfiber inserts, cotton prefolds, a couple hemp inserts, and flips covers.

Help!! I don't want to give up on cloth, and won't without a fight, but dd is only 2 months and we are on our second round of diaper rash with leasions. I don't want her in pain either.

Thanks in advance!!!

  • You need to kill any lingering yeast in your diapers. They could be reinfecting your LO. The best way is to add 1/4-1/2 cup of bleach to the bleach dispenser of your washer during your regular wash cycle.

  • Ditto the pp, you need to bleach the diapers in order to kill the yeast. Otherwise you will continue to have the same issue. 1/4 cup does the trick for us.

  • I personally only use non-chlorinated bleach on my diapers, ever.  Pinstripes and Polka Dots has an excellent article about treating yeast.  Also, I agree about the using the sanitize cycle.  I use FB, which are supposed to be okay to like 130--don't quote me, I can't remember exactly.  The sanitize wash on my Electrolux is 152 degrees.

  • I've had to deal with yeast 4 times due to antibiotics - so I'm speaking from experience here.  You need to use chlorine bleach and Tea Tree oil and Grapefruit seed extract.

The bleach kills the yeast, the TTO and GSE skills the spores.  Turn up you hot water heater to 122degrees (Kills yeast), and don't use the sanitary cycle - its too hot for your PUL.   Don't forget to turn your hot water heater down after the load.

Cotton babies recommends using 1/4 cup bleach on your diapers once a month, so I go with them in figuring that an occasional wash with chlorine bleach is ok.

    My routine:

Turn up hot water heater and wait an hour. Quick wash cycle on cold no spin,  Normal wash HOT with prewash option.  GSE & TTO in prewash detergent compartment, normal detergent in regular detergent compartment.  Run the load.  Dry on low.  Pull out yeast free diapers.
