Hey I'm new here and my husband and I are thinking about TTC but I want to be sure we have all of our bases covered. I have looked high and low trying to find some kind of insurance for our family that covers maternity with no luck at all. We are from Indiana and do not qaulify for any kind of medicaid or anything so it is very important that we start now. Does anyone have any advise on this subject, I am at my wits end in searching.
Thanks!!
Re: Insurance
Call the ob and hospital you would be using and get quotes for a vaginal and c section births. You may find that it would be cheaper OOP, than to pay all that premium. Another option is to look for an employer that offers group coverage. From what I understand for individual coverage you would have to get individual insurance (which I hope you already have, no one should go without insurance) and then pay extra for a maternity rider. Then that rider would have to be in place for a waiting period (a year I think) before you could use it. I'm not sure all insurance companies offer maternity coverage in all states.
If either of you can get insurance through work, it is usually the cheapest option, even if the premiums seem expensive.
Another option that might be cheaper is paying OOP. You'll have research insurance premium prices for maternity coverage vs the cost of delivery.
Also I think it is kind of douchey that you looked into Medicaid. So you think that just because you want a baby right now and don't have maternity coverage, the state (ie tax payers) should pay for it?

PAIF/SAIF Welcome!
This. While you can get quotes from an OB about how much a vaginal delivery and c-section cost, you cannot predict the future. You could have a high-risk pregnancy that requires months of hospital bedrest that would literally bankrupt you without proper coverage.
That is a very good point.
So you got a policy that pays 100 percent with zero deductible and only a 35 dollar copay? I call bull sh!t.
Andplusalso, the amount of premium you would pay for that dream policy would be stupid high. You could probably pay out right for a high risk c section for that kind of money.
