Pregnant after 35

MaterniT21 question

I am 12 weeks pregnant with my 1st child at 35. What is this MaterniT21 test? and when I am I suppose to have it? I am trying to avoid amnio if I can so I want all the other tests. How many are there?

Re: MaterniT21 question

  • The non-invasive tests are as follows:

1st tri screening, usually done at 12-13 weeks, includes an NT (nuchal translucency scan) and bloodwork to measure HCG and PAPP-A.

MaterniT21/Harmony/Verifi are all different companies that offer the same test: a maternal blood draw that can be done pretty much any time after 10 weeks. Fetal DNA is extracted from the maternal blood sample to test for the three trisomies (T21, which is Down's, and T18 and T13). You get positive/negative results back within about 2 weeks.

Quad screen, which is usually done around 15-17 weeks, also called the 2nd tri screening. They test the maternal blood for four different substances (can't remember them all, Google it). This test is actually not all that accurate and results in many false positives and a lot of needless worry for pregnant women.

The usual anatomy scan is a thorough ultrasound done at about 20 weeks to visually verify all of the baby's systems, i.e., closed spinal column, four good chambers of the heart, etc.

I did all of these non-invasive tests except the quad screen. I got good results from all of them and feel perfectly happy not doing an amnio. Others on this board have made different choices and have different experiences to share, but those were mine.

  • Thanks for the explanations!  This is my first pregnancy, so it's all new to me.  I think I have had all of the tests listed, up to the Quad screen, but I'm only halfway through my 15th week, so that makes sense.  So far, my baby is healthy and right where it should be, so I'm happy.
  • Just left Maternal Fetal Medicine ..... I am torn.

MaternitT21 I am guessing is what my Doc is calling the  "Cell Free Fetal DNA" testing. Completely Non- evasive and goes no-where near the baby. Its a bloode test.  Accuracy rate 99.1% for DS. Spina Bifida & Cystic Fib are done on diff blood test.

The NT is also completely non-evasive, a sonogram of babys neck.

The Two most risky tests are CVS and Amnio, CVS being more evasive of the 2.   Amnio is the most accurate 99.9% tests for Everything,  however more chance of a miscarriage.

So DH and I are flip flopping btwn the Non-evasive less accurate Cell Free Fetal DNA or Amnio with high Risk .  It is a very hard decession for me....what if we did Amnio the baby was perfect and it made me miscarry.

    Terrified.
