Babies on the Brain

anyone with PCOS?

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2009, before I got pregnant. Then it took a year to get pregnant with DD. Since i have had DD my periods became more normal 3542 days apart. they arent predictable to the day which annoys me but it beats not being even kind of regular.

I am wondering your experiences TTC? I am blessed to have DD bc they told me it would be very difficult, even alluding to fertility treatments which wasnt necessary at all. i am excited to start TTC in january, but i still am nervous that it could take a long time. So, basically, i am just looking for other similar stories!

Re: anyone with PCOS?

  • OMG I am defiantly going to be watching this thread.

I was diagnosed with PCOS this past October after experiencing an early term miscarrage (I was only 3 weeks), weird, unexplained bleeding during sex, and the lack of visits from AF.  I have yet to actually have a baby. I can't stop thinking about it, wondering "will we ever be blessed"  I am excited to see what everyone else puts.

BTW:  when the Dr. said it is common for women to have PCOS... that really didn't help the way I was feeling.

How long did it take everyone to get BFP with PCOS???

  • I have PCOS with anovulation. I took 6 months of trying and temping before I sought out help with an OB, it was very clear in my temps that I wasn't ovulating at all. OB started the BW, HSG, SA then referred me to an RE. I didn't have any luck with Clomid and we tried that for 3 cycles (didn't ovulate). Then I ended up with a cyst over my ovary and a laprascopy to remove and they found endo. Once that was all cleared up and I was healed we tried Femara+HCG trigger and I was blessed our second cycle of that. I'm very interested to see what my body does after baby.

PCOS can come with a wide variety of issues and complications. Some people may need IF treatments and some don't.

  • PCOS dx in Fall 2005 same day I was told I had type II diabetes (fun!).

1st BFP in Fall 2006 ended in an early m/c and it took 2 years later before I was pregnant w/ DD.

I was thisclose to seeking out an OB/GYN for advice/help when I was very surprised by my pregnancy.

I have not been pregnant since, but if DH & I decide that we are serious about trying for #2, I will talk to my OB about seeing an RE, etc.

As of now, I chart my temps and CM to see if I am actually O-ing, etc. to get more familiar with my cycle.

35-42 days is still well within the range of normal. Start charting your BBT to see if there are actually issues but for now it really doesn't sound like PCOS is affecting your fertility.

  • I was diagnosed at age 16 with PCOS and when my DH and I tried to conceive DS it took over a year. We tried clomid three times and it made me a lunatic. I went off hormones and  we saw a homeopathic doctor and he was able to get me to have my first period without hormones! It was awesome. 2 months later I conceived. DS was born in 09 and now we are trying again. We have since moved so I don't have my ND to see anymore and I'm going to an OB that is supportive of trying everything else before Clomid again. I haven't had a period in over 3 years so consider yourself blessed you at least have them. If you have ANY questions, please feel free to ask! I've been through the gammet with PCOS and endometriosis and I'm also an ultrasound tech.

So here goes my ramble, bc i havent yet talked with my Doctor in detail about TTC #2.

I feel soooo differently this time with getting pregnant.  When i tried for DD, i just knew it was going to take a long time.  This time, i feel like it will happen a lot more easily bc my periods have been regular.  Like PP mentioned, my 33-42 days are totally normal.

When I was diagnosed with PCOS, my doctor said, we need to get you pregnant or he wanted to do some other treatment that would totally reset my system.  We aimed for trying to get pregnant.  My dr said that potentially, having a child would reset my system and PCOS wouldnt be a negative factor in fertility.  It does seem as if having DD did just that.  I also lost a signifcant amount of weight that i think may have also helped.  It sounds as if my PCOS in relation to some of you isnt as bad.  It was absolutely terrible a few years ago, but now it doesnt seem as much of a factor.  I know that even as a teenager, my periods have gone in bouts of being regular then i wouldnt have one for months.  After having an ultrasound (pre-preg) my Dr thought that i most likely have had PCOS a long time.

When i TTC DD, i was on metfomin and progesterone and the month i actually conceived they were gonna start on clomid.  This time, i really hope to not have any of that.  Have you tried any diets or food or supplements that helped you ?  Do you feel that stress made PCOS symptoms worse for you?  I am trying really hard to chart CM, periods, symptoms with ovulating and etc to really indicate if i am ovulating on my own.  I will start my BBT this month as well to get a better idea of my system.  Thank you for all your thoughts and experiences. I greatly appreciate it.

Before i had gotten pregnant, i wouldnt get a period for 3-4 months, then i would bleed for 2 months. Straight.  It was a constant cycle like this, and it was quite obnoxious.  And i felt like complete crap.  I gained a considerable amount of weight, was losing hair like it was nobodys business and was constantly anxiety ridden.  We had numerous testing and ultrasounds which led to my diagnosis.  It took a YEAR after being put on Metformin and progesterone to get pregnant.  the month i actually concieved, they were going to put me on Clomid.  I was told it would take me a while, and that most likely I would need fertility treatments to get pregnant.  I was so blessed to get pregnant and have and uneventful pregnancy.

The hard thing i realize with PCOS is that in a lot of situations, you do ovulate at some point--but its almost impossible to figure out when.  You can also ovualte but never get a period.  Its so obnoxious and annoying.  Dont get discouraged about not being Pregnant.  I am hopeful for everyone with any issue that it can happen.  Our bodies are too amazing for Doctors to really be certain one way or another.

Sometimes pregnancy can seriously help PCOS by "resetting" your hormones as your Dr. says. Others (like me haha) it has the opposite effect. My condition has been worse since DS. There are a million "diets" out there they say help PCOS but honestly, they help the symptoms, not the condition. I have been on Metformin for about 6 months and it has helped the symptoms but it hasn't done anything to control my hormones. Progesterone did trigger an ovulation once but has since not worked. Stress can definitely effect PCOS  because it directly effects your hormones. Like you said, you are still cycling, so charting and timing are going to be the best bet to start with. It will also help your doctor determine if Progesterone is a good option to try next. Are you already taking prenatals? I wish I could remember everything my ND had me on to conceive DS but the few I can remember off the top of my head are Red Raspberry Leaf, Saw Palmetto, Red Clover, and Maca. They can typically all be found in capsule form at a good health food store.

  • Wow Thanks so much for the encouraging words!  I am in the early stages of still trying with PCOS.  I had high hopes of being preggo at Xmas so I could tell the family in a fun way, but I don't think that is going to happen.  Thanks so much!!

  • I have PCOS. I was diagnosed as a teenager and they put me on the pill. It was the only medication I consented to take, though they tried to put me on metformin as well and I refused. I was on the pill consistently from diagnosis until I went off it about 3 years ago, after losing some serious weight (70 lbs.). Since then, my weight loss has stalled and I've gained a little bit back (which my doctor warned me about and very strongly suggested I NOT go off the pill, but I wanted to and did anyways), but I have had regular periods for the first time in my life. YAY! And they were much lighter than normal. I wasn't TTC, but I was tracking, because I wanted to know what was going on with my body. I found that I had an incredibly short LP, and was pretty convinced that I wasn't going to be able to get pregnant without some serious interventions. I had completely come to accept this fact, and both Spouse and I were fine with the idea that it would be just the two of us and the cats and we'd never have kids. Aaaaaaand then, for the first time since I went off the pill, I missed my period. So it took us three years, but we weren't actively trying at any point during that time, though we obviously weren't actively not-trying either. It was a huge shock, and has definitely taken a lot of adjusting (and I'm not quite sure that we have fully adjusted at this point, to be perfectly honest). But here we are!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20s.  I had a surprise pregnancy with DD after going off BC.  I had her in 2005.  Conceiving her seemed like such a piece of cake that I figured it would be the same with #2.  I was very wrong.  7 years later I am now pregnant with #2 and due in February. I never used any fertility treatments but I did end up being put on metformin and synthroid for a thyroid problem.  I wish all of you PCOS ladies a much shorter and easier conception.  I've had 4 losses and so much heart ache.  I had almost given up hope.
