Parenting after a Loss

Advice please

I only work 1 night a week and DH is great with DD, puts her to bed no problem. Well tonight he calls me around her bedtime and was freaking out saying I need to come home and that she wouldn't stop crying and flailing around. He saud she wouldnt take her bottle and seemed sweaty. I could here her screaming in the background so of course I get upset and rush home. She has never got unctrollable before so I got worried. I get home and she fell asleep for him
But I went in to check on her and take her temp. No fever. So I'm thinking she was overtired. She is a horrible napper, takes 20 min cat naps and rarely takes long naps. Everyone tells me not worry about her horrible napping as long as she sleeps good at night. She sleeps great at night usually STTN or 1 MOTN feeding. I can't complain but when she gets this overtired from not napping I don't think it's good. So my question is what should do I about her napping? I don't want to force it! I usually just rock her or put her in her swing naps best when I notice she is sleepy which is usually about 2 hrs after being awake. Do you think she acted like this because she was overtired? My friend mentioned that she could have been throwing a tantrum but I think she is too young for that!? Finally, THANKS for reading this VERY long post!!!!

Re: Advice please

  • Oh, dear, it sounds like we have had the same day! DD definitely gets like that when she's overtired, whipping her little head around and just wailing. And today she was especially crabby all throughout the day... I was reading that the 19 week wonder week fussiness actually starts about now. I definitely don't think babies this age throw tantrums... like you said, she was probably just overtired. It happens. *hugs*

  • DS has been doing this for the past 2 weeks.  As soon as he started STTN his naps got much shorter.  I'm lucky to get 2-3 30min naps.  He is like clockwork and around 7 or so he is miserable.  He's so overtired and does nothing but fuss and cry until he finally gives in and crashes.  I have to rock him and deal with punches, kicks, squirms and screams for a good 20-30 minutes before he falls asleep.  I'm hoping it's a phase and he will start napping better soon because I'm getting nothing done during the day!

  • Hugs! It must have been going around  yesterday. DD did the same thing  last night. And then she didn't want to go to sleep. We did our routine and then fell asleep until I put her down. She continued to scream her head off. I told DH it was because she was tired. He said really all of this because she is tired? Finally around 11 I got her to stay asleep. DD is also a cat napper. I think if she would get 1 really good nap in this wouldnt be such a problem.

  • Sounds like my night two nights ago.  I didnt realize that the four month wakeful affects the daytime too, but for DS it does.  He has gone from taking 2-3 naps that are at least an hour, to two 20 minute naps.  He is exhausted at night and gets really irritable around bedtime.  I'm hoping this passes soon.

  • First, ((hugs)) to you!

I think she is too young to be throwing a tantrum.  My dd is also a crappy

napper, although she also sleeps well at night.  I also started to worry that

she wasn't sleeping enough.  I've tried to put her down for naps within 2 hours before she seems overtired, but she doesn't always take a nap or if she does, it may still be a cat nap.  If she is really overtired and crying, I start the bedtime routine a little earlier and try to put her to sleep a little earlier by comforting her with rocking and nursing.

Also as Russalka said, it is possible your dd is going through wonder week 19, my dd has been fussy off and on the last few weeks and finally yesterday woke up her usual, happy self.
