NICU Visitors

How does visitation in the NICU usually play out?  How many can go in to see LO at once (can me and my DH go together)?  Do they have a list of allowed visitors in case I cannot be there?  Just trying to know what to expect, any information would be helpful.  I know every hospital has different policies, I am just curious.

 Thanks!

Re: NICU Visitors

  • DD was in 2 NICUs...each had their own rules.  In both, parents were allowed 24/7 and a max of 2 people at a time.  The first NICU allowed anyone to visit during certain hours as long as a parent was with them (or if they were ok'ed by the parent to visit without them) and the other NICU only allowed parents, grandparents and siblings of the baby to visit.  Children had to get checked out by a Dr before they could visit, and everyone was required to wash up to the elbows before entering the unit and use sanitizer before touching the baby.

  • At my NICU you could have up to 4 people in the room (2- being myself and DH).  We were allowed to be there 24 hours a day.

Every NICU is different, mine actually has its rules online.  You should check out the hospital's website and see if your's does as well.

EDIT: We all had to wash and disinfect hands on entering.  Access to her room required a key card and only parents (and hospital staff) had cards...

  • My NICU allowed only 2 people at a time. Parents were welcome 24/7 except 7am and 7pm for shift changes.  Grandparents were allowed, but no one else.  Grandparents were allowed in one at a time with 1 parent.  Everyone had to wash their hands before going in/out in the scrub sink.

  • Our NICU allowed parents to visit 24/7. It has a limit of 2 people at the bedside and at least one of them has to be a parent. Visitors were not allowed to enter the NICU without a parent escort and no visitors were allowed to stay without a parent present. Parents had to wear bracelets that had matching numbers to the baby and the bracelets were checked when visiting.
  • our nicu allowed parents 24/7 except during rounds when you were only allowed in the room while they were rounding on your child.   Only 2 people allowed at bedside at a time, 1 of which had to be a parent/guardian.  We were in the NICU during RSV season so there was no children visitation.
